BR4 primer missfires

SO I've heard it mentioned around the traps recently. It seems a few people are experiencing misfires with BR4 primers. I know I am, 4 out of 25 today!

I popped them (yes there was powder in there lol) and they look like new bar the dent in the back!

Jeez Tim your lucky to be shooting this weekend while it's 40C here.
I've not used many BR4's and I not had that problem but also with a different batch.
Only had problems with primers not firing when I had a Barnard.

I'll have to check my batch number, but I had more than 6 out of 24 fail to ignite on the first strike recently. Some went with a second blow, some not at all. Switched to Rem 7 1/2 and no problems thus far.

Yes, had a big issues at the NRAA Queens with a batch of BR4 primers. They were the first of a new batch that I was using - about 30% wouldn't go off.

Switched back to another batch number and presto never another issue, same rifle, same load and same primer seating depth.

Sorry, don't have the batch number as I sent them back to NIOA for a new box - which they have replaced for me.

Just about everybody who uses small CCI primers uses 450 magnums, even in 6BR.

I've seen and heard this problem, haven't had it as I am using FED's

Mark uses BR4's in his Palma cases, pretty sure he has had a few issues too.

And me!
Vicki and I would have used approx. 5000 BR4 last year without one hiccup.
that would have been 3 different batches at least and all in Barnards FWIW.

This is a recurrent problem with all CCI primers and I think the primary cause is the relatively malleable cup material they use.
This is of course associtad with other causes:
A weak firing pin spring.
Insufficient striker protrusion.
Loose primers.
Case sized too short, wich allow agap between case and chamber shoulders,the round mowing forward onn impact,dampening the striker blow (and making life hard for the extractor as well).

Also, I get the impression that small primers are generally more problematic than large. I have used approximately 20,000 BR-2 primers in Barnard actions and have not had a single primer failure with them (nor with any other large primer for that matter). Small primers seem to be less tolerant of the other causes you mention.

Robert, in years past, the Millenium bolt internally gave eratic ignition with too much oil , it gave a hydrolic affect variation, a slight dusting with mos2 or graphite solved that problem I think ? chop

I dont think many look at a consistant and posotive ignition , In my experience as an old powder Monkey ,the VOD , velocity of detonation was ,regulated by the ignition, Chop

True. It has always been rrecommended to keep the system dry, except the sear of course. This is same for all makes of actions.
