running in my new 6.5 Super LR

#1 Postby smlekid » Sun Apr 06, 2014 8:32 am

Hi all I hope to have my new F Open set up in my hands next week just curious on what people are doing to run in there new barrels I was thinking of 1 shpt and clean for the first 5 then maybe 2 shots and clean for the next 10
what loads should I use I was thinking of using some of my flatbase bullets for running in with a mild charge of 2209 around 42grs?

smle
I have a 6.5 super lr and am quite happy with it.
in my gun 43.5 gn 2209 with 140 hunting berger is what I consider max for case life,
I ran it in using 42 gn 2209 and some old bergers I had.
3 x 1, 3x2, 3.3, and 3x5.
I then cleaned it every 10 to count up to 100 shots, and it seemed to benefit from this.
it took quite a bit of working out a cleaning regime which stopped poi changing after 5 or 6 shots, but in the end 10 strokes with hopes no 9 proved to be the answer.
I have still not worked up a load, but it seems to shoot well anywhere between 42 and 43.5 of 2209 with the 140 hunting. that bullet because it is what I could get.
it is wonderful to shoot.
I would say it is like a 284 with 168 bullets but with less recoil.
your suggested runin would be just as ok as mine, but no barrel is fully run in fully until 100 - 200 shots.
enjoy the experience.
keep safe,
bruce.

smle,
further to the last post.
since the post I have just formed 100 cases from lapua brass.
the neck area that was formed from shoulder brass is too thick to be safe. be very wary of this if you want to retain your face when you fire it.
the original Winchester brass was good to form, and necks had uniform thickness from end to end.
I had to neckturn it after fireforming to blow out the crease at the original neck/shoulder junction in order to get an even cut, but there was 0.002 clearance from end to end of the necks in the chamber.
this lapua brass would not chamber easily if at all. 0.005 too tight.
keep safe,
bruce.

Thanks Bruce I ran the first 20 rounds through the rifle last night after about 15 shots there was a noticeable drop in copper fouling I used some Nosler custom comp 140gr bullets and 41.5grs of 2209 (it was what the powder thrower through when I was setting it up was to lazy to adjust it .5 of a grain)
I have 500 Berger 140 VLD's that6 I will play with for the longer ranges I think the Noslers will shoot well enough for a start the last 6-7 shots went into .700" at 100 with a cleaning in beetwen just seated then until the bolt would close so no set up work for accuracy yet
it is a nice rifle to shoot looking forward to some load development next step will be 42 42.5 43 43.5 gr loads with the Noslers to see what happens

smle,
you too notice the pleasantness to shoot of this round!
your running in load was a good one. better a bit on the light side.
I am starting to find that 43.5 gn 2209, while very safe IN MY GUN will slowly expand primer pockets, and am looking at it as an absolute max load, trying to find a good load nearer to 43 gn.
it is amazing the amount of grunt this little round puts out for its ease of shooting.
I think it would make a great medium game hunting cartridge with 100 to 120 gn bullets, far better than the 243 win.
keep safe,
bruce.
