Hi all,
Just wondering if there is any plans for a 5.56 factory ammo using the 80gn projectiles? and if so what sort of specs are being looked at.

factory 5.56 ammo
Firepower usally means an increased number of misses per minute. 50 misses are not firepower. One hit is firepower

5.56 Factory Ammo
I can see that I am going to start something with what follows but here goes anyway.
The majority of shooters that use 5.56 to shoot long distance will probably realize that having a factory round with an 80 grain pill will not cut the mustard.
The main reason I see behind this thought is that where ever I have been, for accuracy reasons, the majority 5.56 reloader,“myself included” (In Australia) uses more powder than the recommended maximum. With AR2208, accurate loads are usually in the vicinity of 2% heavier.
A manufacturer of ammunition would never do this.
The ammunition may be suitable for the short ranges but such light loads never has been for me. Besides, I prefer to have all my ammo the same…saves the possibility of human error that so often rears its ugly head.
Don’t get me wrong though, I would love to have the opportunity to have a week or two off reloading from time to time.
It’s not all bad though because the Nosler 80 gr pill has been ratified for use now, which gives more selection…with the same profile and BC as the Sierra I find it had to call it a choice though but it does solve the supply problems.
Just a quick note to finish with…are we short of 80 gr Sierra pills because of bad management or simply because others out there are finally realizing that the good old 5.56 is a force to be reckoned with.
Kind Regards

I believe it is the calibre of choice of the US army to mention just one, so guess where the production supply priority is going.
Of course I could be wrong, there may be another altogether valid reason but....

Factory 5.56 Ammo
I wouldn't have a clue how many 80 grain pills are used per annum in Australia but wouldn't it be great if we had our own supplier.
Having said this, it would still be interesting to know the specs on a so called possible "no pun intended" factory load using the 80gr pill so I am as keen as mitchellchandler_au to find out what the general concensis is.

I don,t usually get into this but----as my F-Class rifle, Open, is not considred correct for DRA comp. therefor I have looked at :legal:alts.
I have a .308 barrel, chambered for 200gn + proj. it shoots 155gn a bit loose(can still win a local 356) so had a look at .223
What others have proved is that it,s on a par with .308 out to the longs, where as they all do, it shuts down quick, a bit like my fav. 6mmBR.
Now here is the crunch-Try your .223R, 80gn, at al, with a powder like
VV140, VV540 and it will kill a .308 at 1000M
Is that why we can,t use it in F/Std?

It's funny that you mention that we cant use Winchester powder to reload because isn't that what is in the factory .308 stuff

Well there you go.
One is never too old to learn...seriously though it does make sense when you reference it to the SSR's...I must be thicker than I thought.
