What sort of freebore would you experienced .284 users recommend for my (first) new 30" Maddco 1 in 9 twist barrel ? Neck will be 0.313".
I am basically only intending to shoot 168 gr and 180 gr Bergers, depending on what is available.
On some US sites, which seem to be inhabited by a lot of individuals who probably do not have the levels of expertise and experience ( nor performances) that is apparent here on OzFClass, I have read everything from 0.080" to 0.350".
Thanks in advance
Tony

+1 on all these comments. It is a bit of a compromise because there is not a great deal of neck on the 284 and going short to accomodate 168 class may get you close to donut with 180 VLD especially if you want to try any sort of jump. I run 0.220 as well and find it good all round for 168/180 VLD, 175/180SMK and 180 Hybrid. There is a bit of room for the longest (180 VLD) when touching/jamming but might not get away with much more than a 40-60 thou jump (at a guess). I don't find this a problem though as I have found all 5 barrels of mine like a jam. I would also guess that running shorter than around 0.180 would also put you close even at a jam so stick within the suggestions above and you would be fine.
ps Matt - that sounds like you are getting dangerously close to unleashing the 284 on us??

goys,
you all make good points.
0.200 is a min for the 180 vld touching and still be above the donut.
0.220 will allow a bit of jump with the same bullet.
i have no experience with the 180 sierra so cannot comment.
0.200 will allow the 180 hybrid a fair bit of jump and the 168 vld.
both will allow chasing of the rifling as it erodes and often a rechamber is required after this happens 0.060.
this covers the bullet in the case theory.
the other one, that having as much bullet in a nice fitting freebore is good, will require a lot more freebore, and possibly one suited to 180 vld will be too long for a 168.
people who do this are lookiing to overcome the effects of potential runout in ammo, hoping the freebore will overcome this. a bit like breach seating.
keep safe,
bruce.

Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. I really appreciate you guys sharing what has to be the fruit of many years of "dedication to precision", and look forward to hopefully meeting you all at bigger events over the next year or two and buying you all a drink.
