best twist rate for 69gr sierra,s for 223

#1 Postby jerryatric » Wed May 15, 2013 3:27 pm

hi, i have around 3000 [ 69 gr ] sierra projectiles & am getting a new barrel fitted shortly . rifle is a savage with factory 1 in 9 twist rate - I know you can buy better 80 gr projectiles but i have too many 69 grainers to even bother + the rifle will only be getting shot out to 300 / 400 yards max at range .. WOULD the 1 in 9 twist rate be better to stick to or maybe a 1 in 8 twist ?. LIKE i said i dont want to or see the need to buy 80 grainers when i have a good supply of the 69 grainers . thanks .

I use the 69 SMK in a 1:8T 223 barrel at 300m, im using 2208 and BR4's they work well in this barrel i'm sure they'd be fine in a 1:9T, I use the 77gr Nosler Custom Comps for 500m, ( these probably wouldn't stabilise in a 1:9T )

Safe shooting

Get an 8 twist so you can use 80 grainers after you run out of 69's. I used to shoot 69gr noslers out of a 10 twist 22BRX and they were very accurate and quite devastating on ferals too I might add.
