2209 with 30 cal 155.5 Bergers
Has anyone used 2209 with 155.5's that could share an approx load to start? I have plenty of 2209 and some 8208, zero 2208.
thanks in advance.

I doubt you could get enough 09 in the case with 155's.

Tried that Geoff. Most I could get in the case was 50 gn. Never chronographed but they went thru sideways at 900 yards.
Might be ok up to 600. Nice to shoot though.

It will work well in a 30/06 AI

You'd be better off using the 8208. It's similar to 2206 I believe.

Re: 2209 with 30 cal 155.5 Bergers
2209 works well in the 9.3x64 if you compress it 0.4" to get enough in !
this does have disadvantages, in that sometimes the powder needs recompression to maintain coal.
too much compression can also bulge the case so it will no longer fit the chamber.
too much trouble there and the same would apply in a 308.
how does 2209 go in a 308 with 200 + gn bullets?
keep safe,
bruce.

Bruce, a lot of nay sayers but, with a 200gn projectile i can easily get 2750fps so I'm thinking a lighter pill (155gn) should be ok to reach 2900+ with a similar load. Some testing with the LabRadar might be in order. If i can't reach 2900+ I'll report back.

geoff,
sometimes it is amazing how compressed powder produces low velocity s.d.

Re: 2209 with 30 cal 155.5 Bergers
There seems to be a kick over point with 2209 in 308 cases, that allows the powder to burn cleanly and completely within the barrel. Bullets of 208g will allow the powder to burn properly within the barrel, bullets of 190g the powder does not get properly consumed in the barrel. I have seen little fires (lots of whisps of smoke) in front of the firing point when using 180 or 190 grain bullets with 2209.
On another occasion an indicator of something strange happening, was my chronograph giving really fast velocities when testing 308 loads. Some of the velocities were in excess of 4000 fps. I could only put it down to particles of unburnt powder going through the screens. Barrel length >32", chronograph at 5m from muzzle, large rifle primers.
My opinion is that 155g bullets and 2209 just will not give enough barrel pressure to consume all the powder within the barrel. This increases risk of inconsistency.

Re: 2209 with 30 cal 155.5 Bergers
would re 17 have a more suitable profile for this job?
there is now re 16 as well, but burning rate is not understood here.
i think re 17 might burn just a little faster than 2209 but not sure.
i know some match rifle shooters mix powders, but am a bit wary of that.
also would hotter primers assist 2209 in the 308 case?
keep safe,
bruce.

Re: 2209 with 30 cal 155.5 Bergers
The first question I would ask is, why bother.
If you are chasing velocity there is more effecient powder to do that with than the 2209/155 combination.
If it’s accuracy, LOW SD’s etc maybe, but I’ll back what is said above and say poor pressures pushing the 155 will result in a poor burn, hence what Phillip was saying, I 100% agree with it.
A properly designed cartridge, with a chamber designed to suit is what you need, cramming 09 into a case/chamber/seating depth/throat properly setup for it may yield reasonable results, but again, I’m not sure why you would do this with 155’s, what is your goal, I’m interested to hear it.
As a side note, I’m running 2208 with 200H’s with not a lot less 08 than the average punter will get 09 into a .308 case, a properly designed rig will yield amazing results, but that planing starts at a real base level of velocity your trying to achieve then designing the case and chamber around it.
09 was not yielding the results I had wanted and I’ll go as far as saying I believe it is a less than ideal powder for the .308 case, especially Palma brass.

Re: 2209 with 30 cal 155.5 Bergers
It works..... same load of 2209 for the 200gn gives 2905fps with room to spare.
But, as my post says,i only have 2209 and some 8208, NO 2208.. so, I'll try 8208 next which will fit in nicely. I know of some TR shooters still using 2206 which was the original go to powder. 8208 being nearly similar will do for now as a trip to buy powder is an 8 hour drive.
thanks everyone for your input.

8208 might be the way to go.
a bloke at my club worked a load up using 155.5s and 8208 with a es of 3 which is astounding
