260 AI (******old post*******)
**************** This thread is six years old. I am not shooting the 260ai anymore*********************
Could someone with a 260 Ackley Improved please post or PM me some load data ? I will be using 140gr bergers, and 2209, as i have about 1kg. After looking at Quickload I was thinking of fireforming 260 rem brass with 44g 2209, and upping the load for the improved cases by 2-3 grains. Any thoughts ?
Out of a 30in barrel i am hoping to get around 3000fps ??

260 AI load
Mac , I fire form with 43 of 2209 in my 260 AI. IT depends on barrel and reamer dimensions but I would not go any hotter than that to fire form! Brass is soft when new and they will stretch in length with no consistency if too hot . Mine were doing 2830 fps with that fire form load from a 30 inch Kreiger and it would easily shoot 60"s out to 600 no problem so I formed them shooting in club shoots. For formed cases I would start at 44 gns and go up and I would expect you would settle for somewhere between 44 and 45 with 45 being on the warm side. I started seeing pressure at 45 in mine so I backed it off to 44.5 and that gave me 2940fps with 2209. 3000fps is achievable but found 2213 did it easier with less pressure, 48 gns game me 3000 on the button...

Yes, 43g seems like a moderate fireform load for 140g, no excessive pressure. I also have some 130gr berger vlds and will go 44g 2209 with them for fireforming.
I had some unrelated case issues using lapua brass that had already been fired in a different rifle and had swelled a couple of thou at the case head and was sticking even before firing, but now i have sorted some fresh cases ........

I have been testing some loads and, for me working up was a bit too hot, as in accuracy dropped off. Today I borrowed a chronograph and in my 260 ackley 44gr of 2209 gives 2995 fps avg with 140gr bergers (and 3030fps with 130gr)
As its more consistent than 44.5 gr I think i will go down to 43.5 , 43.7 and look for the node there, with 140gr hybrids and vlds.
I may try a slower powder but when i tried 48gr 2213sc it was too much...

There is usually a node around the 2950 mark with the 6.5 so you will find that real easy by the looks of your speed !! Your chamber dimensions or barrell may be a little different to mine hence the slightly higher pressure but if you can get 2950 with a bit less of 2209 then all the better!!!

Funny that. Im running almost identical- 43.2 in a slightly different 260 improved with less case capacity but only getting 2870. Obviously your barrel is faster than mine. They do shoot well though and the wind drift compared to a 7mm is very little in difference. At long range in a rough head or tail wind is probably where you might struggle a little if any. The 6.5's really are great guns to use. Will be rebarreling mine after the WARA queens.

Re: 260 AI load data please
Could not be happier with my 260AI. I gave it a run in Brizzie and at 1000 yds it held the x ring for a nice little 5 shot string, and with the low recoil you can rattle them off almost as fast as my dasher. ... Not one bad elevation shot in 3 days. Statistically, when the weather gets bad a 7mm has a slight edge, but this gun is a great all rounder 300-1000. I was shooting 140vlds at 2950-70.

Re: 260 AI load data please
Glad its going well for you MAC !!! I have become a big fan of the cartridge myself and find it hard to put it away in the case and shoot something else!!! I have 2 barrels for mine and was doing some load testing on the newer one at 1000yds on sunday. conditions were very mild but was happy to walk off with a 60.6 and 60.5.. Its a very good cartridge that seems to have 95% the accuracy of the 6mm and 95% wind drift of the 7mm !! Some say beware the man with 1 gun!!!

Re: 260 AI load data please
Hey Brett ,
Just in process of planning a 260AI build specifically for 147 eldm hornady pills .
I reckon 2213 or even 2217 is needed for the slower burn rate and hence less pressure .
Will be fireforming adi308 brass after neck turning .
Any recomendations on loads for this . I want to able to get out to 1500 yds maybe .
Cheers Bill
