Omark For F Open Calibre ?

Post by tom1 »

Hi I have an Omark that I rarely use as I use several other rifles for TR, one in 308 & one in 223. I have been thinking for awhile about getting this rifle set up for one of the F Class categories.
I have a new barrel adapter and given WA's licencing laws it would probably be easier to convert this rifle than to get another added to my licence. I also like to try different things out so going down the path of 308 or 223 doesn't excite me.
I realize that another calibre would require new dies etc , but I'm sure I could find those .
Also I'm not overly keen on recoil so something around the 6 or 6.5mm would satisfy me.
Now a couple of questions:
Will the Omark action be up to the pressures of a 6 or 6.5mm ?
Have any members of our forum done this ?
This project would only be used for club shoots and our range only goes back to 700 yards sadly.
Appreciate any advice given.
Cheers Brad Probert

I have had an Omark in 260 rem running 120 gn pills with no problems, your 308 brass will re size to 260 rem in one pass through a full length 260 die. I have also shot the same rifle in 6.5x47 lap again using the 120 gn pills with great results. and if you are thinking of 6mm I have a good mate who has been running his Omark in 6 BR and its a tack driver. your shoulder will love you for it, go for it.

6BR is a great choice; still a 308 bolt face, easy to tune, shares powder with the 308 (2208), components and dies aren't too extreme to get a hold of (except collet dies). I started off shooting a 6BR Barnard and it dominated the local F-Open Pennant for a couple of years. In decent conditions, it'll just about outshoot anything up to 600yd.

Coincidentally, I have a full 6BR setup for sale

Thanks for the replies, it has given me some idea of which calibre to go for. Would the 260 Rem have a bit more "legs" if I was to use it over the longer ranges ?
What is barrel life expectations with the 6BR & 260 Rem ?
Is a 6.5 x 47 Lap pushing the pressure limits of an Omark ?
Thanks appreciate any advice.

6mm S/LR could be another option - depending on projectile availability in Wait Awhile.
105gn pills at 3000fps is an interesting beast.
