Sharing Shooting Data/Files & Programs

Post by IanP »

This thread is really addressed to the Moderators and Owners of this website but all are welcome to comment.

How many of us have written specific programs or files to help us in our shooting? My bet is that there are a lot of really helpful files produced by shooters that we could all benefit from.

Is it possible for ozfclass.com to host these files for downloading to registered users of this site.

An example of one such MS Excel file I'm only too happy to share is in the thread 20 Min Scope Rail (http://ozfclass.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1576). I can email this small xls file (28kB) to anyone wanting it but a ozfclass download repository might be worth considering.

All files could be scanned for viruses and scams before posting for downloading. What do you think?

An example of a useful Excel file for calculating the MOA of a scope rail is shown below.

I'm disappointed that not one moderator has bothered to comment on this idea. So far I have had 11 requests for the SightRamp calculator spreadsheet file and I have happily sent them on their way to members of this forum.

How difficult is it for this site to host a few shooter contributed files/programs for downloading? Any comments from other forum members would be greatly appreciated. I am sure I'm not the only one who thinks it to be a good idea. I'm not talking about a download site for anything but member contributed original files/programs that help the shooter to enjoy and participate in the sport.

If its not possible to do this using the ozfclass host forum for technical reasons so be it, but please comment as the silence on this is deafening.

Ian this site is run and moderated by Alan Fraser, it might be an idea to send a PM direct to him.

Ian,

I hadn't read your earlier post - as Lynn suggests, PM or E-mail if you want to contact me.

Regarding your request, its a good idea but.... the main concern I have is that some people could get over-enthusiastic and post very large files, and if they are popular, this could have a significant effect on the website traffic volume, and hence increase the monthly cost. Perhaps it can be done via ImageShack or a similar service - I'll look into it.

Thanks for responding Alan! If the ozfclass website cant host shooters files for downloading then there are free options.

I found http://www.mediafire.com/ to be highly rated by most pc magazines and will set up a file for downloading and post it here for testing.

A suggestion would be to pin these files to a forum thread (eg Shooters Files and Utilities) and gradually build up a collection of original files that make our life a little easier. To be continued...

Its all too easy when you know how! Please test this link for its ease of operation and post results. Remember you need Microsoft Office Excel to run this simple file.

Please see http://ozfclass.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1615 for more information on making files available for download.
