Reloading for a Short Barrel

Post by brent_86 »

Hi,
I have been shooting F-TR for a bit of fun for the last six months or so and so far have really been enjoying the sport, However i only have a 20" barrel on my 308 so i have been loading the 155 lapua bullet to help me keep up a bit with the longer guns. I am interested in working up a new load to be within the rules. I keep reading that the new dyer has a higher B.C than the sierra or nosler but what is the actual figure?

Thanks'

Brent,

Most call it at .5, about the same as the Lapua. I've only shot it twice, once at 500 & once at 600 yards, but the fall of shot compared to the standard Dyrer was about spot on with ballistic predictions for that BC.

Incidentally, I made no effort to work up a load for it & in a senile daze, set my seater for what I thought would give it the same short jump I've been using. I screwed up 7 gave them .060" but they didn't mind. The 500 yard had quiet spots & in the second half, I hit the spotter six times for a group of 2½-3 inches, according to my mate marking.

Oh, I do moly.

That should be excellent I found that that i don't loose much velocity when using 2206H my current load is 46gn which gives me a average velocity of 2903fps with the scenars, will this be competitive against a longer barreled gun? I'm probably reading to much into it but how much speed would a longer barrel gain on me?

Brent, have a look on the Thales Aust site and they have some velocity figures for there different powders with different sized rounds. I think though if you are getting 2900fps+ with a shorter barrel then thats a good load.

There is much debate with regards to short vs long barrel. I dont profess to understand it as I've heard that shorter barrels are better for .308 as you get better accuracy with a shorter and more ridig barrel but you lose velocity which is the down side. I think that when you start getting out to 800yds + that the longer barrels and their velocity come into play.
