80 Grain AMax seating depth

Post by richmac »

Thanks Rich for the info,
I have spoken to a few people and they seem to all go with 10 thou jump.
I will try both 10 in and out and see what the results show.
I also have to work a load for the longs as we dont need to make em subsonic as a few have had them tumbling at 800 mtrs.
I think if I work with 2208 I should get there I hope.
Many Thanks
Rich

Amax 223 projectiles

Post by richmac »

HI Again
I tried the 80 grain Amax after the club shoot today.
I had 2 brilliant rounds withe the Siera 80 grainers.
I decided to try out the 80 grain A Max with a jump of 10 though.
Ummmmm like chalk and cheese no where near the group of the Siera 80 grainers also with 10 thou jump.
Raven ( Richard) posted to seat them between 10 and 15 though into the lanse.
Rich I think U might be right as quite a few people said 10 thou jump was the go.
I will now listen to U and I will prepare the next batch between 10 & 15 thou into the lanse
stay tunned lol I will post the results as I go
Good shooting all
Regards Rich

hi richard,
just goes to show, all rifles are not the same.
could be worth trying 0.020 out of the lands, as well as 0.010 in.
some rifles will shoot vld bullets more than 0.050 off the lands, while most seem to like 0.010 to 0.025 in.
your rifle might have a sierra only barrel.
first step is to try 10 in & 10 out to see if jump or jam is preferred. thenwhich ever is better, increase it in 0.005 increments. less than 0.010 usually causes more trouble than it solves.
another way is to start with square rifling marks on seated projectils to establish a max powder charge.
then back off in 0.050 increments until best grouping occers. the good thing about this method is that pressures generally reduce as jam decreases.
be aware that pressures will rise as you go from jump to jam.

another tip for new jammers.
don't get caught as i did in a shootoff at last yeas's queens with insufficient neck tension. i ended uo with a bullet stuck in the rifling and locking lug recesses full of 2209 when i unloaded a round.
use at least 0.003 neck tension, particularly if you lube inside case necks or projectiles, or have a cleaning rod handy with a patch in an eye type jag.

A Max

Post by richmac »

Hi all
Done some chron this mornin!! was not impressed, ran my Amax 80 Grainers using a load of 25.4 of 2208 with ten thou jump coated with Danzac.
I was shocked at the speeds that I got.
2850 fps.
Not impressed, these would be subsonic at 800 mtrs or 900 yards
I also grabbed a mates load who is using 24.5 of 2206h (raw Bullets) and run that though the chrono. The speed we got was 2950 fps.
I think its time to forget about coating bullets and go back to raw bullets,
Cheers Rich  .

I coat my bullets in goats milk or is it snake oil, no wait, Yak fat :)

Really, I cant see the point of putting anything on a bullet, when nothing better happens to it while it gets to the other end. Nothing scientifically proven that is - not just an idea someone had once.

I'm using 0.040" jump in our club rifle using Noslers or SMK's. The rifle simply hates Noslers, so we went back to SMK's this week. Absolutely no problem with velocity through the 1000y target. Incidentally, we cant use less jump, as the bullet would fall out of the case mouth.

Never chrony'd the load, but be interesting to see what they do. 25 grains 2208 in Lapua cases.

Sounds like a load of fat yak to me.

Sounds weird...I only have .009 jump (stuffed up measurement...near enough to .010) and mine utilise the entire length of the neck and then a bit...go crunch when I load with 25.4 of 08 in 92.5gn Winchester brass.
My old 69gn machine used to hang on by just .085.

Mine flog along at a tad over 3100...seen some reloading data from a mad yank site where they push them out to 3500...not keen myself to replicate a failure like seen of a mutual friend.

Cheers.

Just an idea about the speed readings. How accurate is your crony? I was having big problems with mine, giving me big speeds one day, then later on saying I was 150 fps slower. I couldnt get any consistancy with it from day to day. Fist time I used it to check my 7mm, it said I was getting 2950 fps, so I thought you beaut, that is the speed I am after, then retesting with the same loads, (loaded in same batch) gave 2770 one day 2800 the next week, back to 2750 fps later again, same outside temps, just some days cloady, some not. Then this was a cheap F1 Crony.
