Aluminium Stock???

that paticular bright idea came along the other nite when i was on the header
radio in header only has 1 station that works and that is triple J and i can only listen to triple J for a finite timespan , then the cogs start whirring & the ideas factory starts up, sometimes during the day the grey matter goes on to auto pilot , at other times i finetune my plan for world domination

i do have faith in my aim, more lead flying in direction of bird= greater faith

have a trip to the coast planned, involves bringing rifle & shooting at yarloop 1 sunday,just waiting on plod to entrust me with a 5.56. they seem to have a problem with me having 2 rifles, spose u think i shouldnt be entrusted with a shanghai

Seriously guy's....any sketches, drawings, pic's or the like will help as would the name of a place to supply alloy.

Design so far will consist of a stock that would be delivered in a brief case with optional forends to accommodate TR and F O & ST.

Biggest problem will be getting the rifle to ballance and may have to incorporate something to assist in maintaining such when different action/barrel combinations are used with altered butt lengths and heights.

Also had a bit of a play with an adjustable bit for recoil lug..not sure if good idea but input would be awesome.

So get the old grey matter working.... ideas/thoughts are only stupid if we keep them in our minds.

Materials?
Hand grip?
Trigger well?
??? Whatever....any ideas???

Not a bad piece of work Aubrey...the colouring of such a stock should not be much of a problem but the idea I am looking at will be able to accommodate most shooters (leftys or rightys) as well as a number of actions whilst being completely adjustable to give the optimum natural shooting postion whateve it may be for each individual.
Mean task, but I am keen.

Rob, 6061 T6 bar stock of that size is only available ex USA according to my father. We use quite alot of 6061 T6 internal radiused reectangular tube for making aircraft.

But he suggests that you source 5083 Marine Plate that is available 50mm thick, its easy to weld and easy to machine. This material is available from:

Try Smart Aluminium in Malaga. I have been there quite a few times - they are quite useful. I know they have offcuts of various sizes, and some different alloys. They cater for the hobby and small buyer, rather than just doing huge orders like some.

Last time I was there, I picked up some 50mm plate offcuts to make myself a stock, which I have not got near yet.

We are getting a stack of 40mm plate cut for our bedding blocks.

Because of difficulty in obtaining larger size alloy I have altered my design to suit 50 x 50 6061 T6 and have also added further to adjustability by doing so...amazing it is when the brain has to think outside its usual plain of thought.

All I need now is a suitable small mill to carry out required tinkering to get a prototype happening. So if anyone has one they no longer use or have upgraded to a larger one (single phase only) or even some ideas on how this might be done with other machinery I am all ears.

I am still looking for all thoughts other may have to make the process easier, cheaper, more adjustable to the individual and so on....so get that grey matter working guys.

Just thinking about this for a few days there might be a cheaper way to get into doing some milling:

Cross slide tables can be bought separately. That is the table, which can be moved via screws / handles left/right/in/out. See if you can get a half reasonable drill press (cast iron), even an old rusty one - the heavier the better. With a solid shaft size and bearings, a drill press can be used as a mill.

This wont give you a lot of movement, but might be a way of getting started. Either way, you will need a good drill press. You will need at least 2000rpm to cut aluminium with a smallish end mill.

Make a forge with an old 20 liter tin and a vacuum cleaner as a blower - you could use your hair dryer.

Melt the bloody stuff.

Pour it into a mould made from sand pinched from the nearest construction site.

Buy some new sanding drums, bushes & a shock fitting or two for your Dremel &

You need to do some weight training RP (ozfarm) if you are having trouble pulling your finger out of your ring.

Hold on to your panties guys....the mill is not far off but will take a while at the pace I am used to to complete a prototype....but I have come up with a few more good s on my own since no one else has any!!!!!
