Hi All
I am about to upgrade my chronograph and get one that works properly.
I have a Chrony but it just wont give me a consistant reading and I am affraid I will dump it and upgrade to a more reliable one.
I have had good feedback on the CED Millenium with the infrared.
I also have seen others on the market that promise all the good things that you expect.
Any input would be appreciated as I am looking for something that works well.
Like to hear your input on what you use and your recomendations
Cheers Rich
I have a CED M2 (not infra-red). Its okay but seems to give more bad readings than my Chrony, even in very good conditions. Could be something I am doing - usually needs a restart when it goes bad. I'm wondering if it has MS Windows in there somewhere .
CED is the way to go
interfaced with your desk top or laptop easy usb connection
large digital screen
voice read out
one button read out for SD/ES/AV/Hi/Lo/
With the IR screens you can test any time day or night??
Hi Rich
I have had a good look at the web site that you posted below and had a very good read.
I have decided to go with the CED Millenium,German technology etc.
Do you use the Infrared screens all the time?
I see they are listed at $89 as a extra, but with prices the way they are I will be expecting a increase in that price.
Thanks for the heads up on this product.I will post another message after I have tried it out.
It would be good if you could calabrate a chronograph like a set of digital scales, run a disk through the computer and reset it to factory standards if it went stupid on you like Allans has.Perhaps in the future this might happen with modern technology.
Thanks again
Cheers Rich
I use the IR screens all the time light plays a large part in getting a consistant reading.
I purchased a sealed rechargable battery pack from a hobby shop so I dont have to have 240v near by
The CED has 2ft ,4ft, 6ft & 8ft screen spacing options
The electronics in the CED's are modern and have a fast clock speed
I am not sure about the Oehler 33P
Alan should contact the distributor in Aus and have it looked at lets all find out what the after sales service is like??
Cheers

Yes I'm thinking about doing that but I did buy it from Sinclairs so not sure what the Australian distributor's attitude will be. I said bad readings, but its actually error signals that I get e.g. saying one of the screens didn't detect the shot. Will try it for a bit longer and see if there is a pattern to the errors before sending it off.
BTW the M2 model comes with one screen spacing only. Quoting from the manual "the CED M2 is only designed to function with a 2ft mounting bracket. The high speed digital circuitry and advanced firmware are designed to eliminate the need for longer spacing of the sensors in order to achieve greater accuracy." Hmmmm....
Thanks James. It may need to go to Hong Kong anyway by the look of the 2 year Warranty document. However I've sent an E-mail to BoxTrade -will report back on the results.
I have used a CED M2 for 12 months and it works really well with or without IR screens. The only problems I have encountered are when the internal 9V battery runs low or if the front screen is placed to close to the rifle.
Muzzle blast will cause the errors you refer to if the front screen is too close. Keep it 4 metres from the barrel just to be sure muzzle blast isnt the cause and then bring it closer until you start getting errors. When you get the errors appearing you know you are too close.
I made my own IR screens using 18 IR leds per screen and connected them to 24VDC using two mini SLA 12V batteries in series. I will put up an DIY article on safclass.com soon.
I have contacted Peter Dawson at BoxTrade. As expected he will service locally bought units only. So it looks like Hong Kong is the go.
Ian,
Thanks for the tips. My problem seems to be irrespective of battery condition, and I set it up with front screen about 5m from the muzzle. I will try it a bit further just in case - would be good to have longer cables.
Alan, these CED M2s work great, persevere with it as its well worth fixing the problem.
I noticed in the manual it states that if you are using it on a white/reflective surface (like snow) the underside of the projectile gets illuminated and reflects back onto the sensors. This causes the sensors to miss the projectile going thru because the sensor is looking to detect a shadow.
I spray painted the bright aluminium support bar for the sensors black to eliminate the chance of the support causing errors in the bright Oz sunshine.
I think my IR sensor array mounted to the underside of the sky screens has made this chrono supremely accurate with repeatable readings within a few fps of each other when load testing. I have used a dark acrylic to mount the IR leds on to reduce light passing thru the sky screens.
Recently testing loads for my 6.5x47L and a mates 308W at the Para Range, under shelter, showed just how consistent the CED is under changing light conditions with the IR light source fitted. Once you get it fixed you may want to consider buying the IR screens or making your own. I think we recorded 1 error out of 50 test loads and that happened when we changed the angle we fired thru the screens and it shook the screens as it passed thru.
