Moly Coated Bullets

G'day all,

Anyone use Moly coated projies for F-Std or F-Open? Is it worth it, how much difference does it make, etc.

It's another variable, cost and job added to reloading. You still need to clean, just less often,wont make your rifle shoot any better, reduces pressure, therefore reducing velocity and your barrel will probably wear just as quickly regardless of whether you use it or not.

I personally dont see the point but if you ask anyone who uses it you will no doubt get a much different answer.

The best way to find out is to try it for yourself and see how it compares to not using it.

Tom,

I've heard that it can increase velcoity due to having less friction on the bore but as you say theres a few amount of different opinions.

I've used moly in nearly all my 6.5 barrels and all showed a slight velocity drop. Some ballisticians say its because there's less pressure build-up due to less friction - others say its because burning the moly lowers the temperature and hence the pressure - maybe its a bit of both. You can usually get the velocity back by increasing the charge - and some say you'll actually get LESS pressure with moly at the same velocity. The main reason I do it is to lengthen the time between cleans - everyone seems to agree this is the case.

Thanks for that. I usually only clean every 200-300rds in my kreiger 30cal barrel so only an advantage of cleaning isnt worth it for me. Cheers though, learn something new everyday.

I cant for the life of me remember where I read they can give an increase in velocity.

Hi Quick,
Its Holden V Ford.
When I started the guys at my range were into molly, so I followed suit.
I still use moly pills in all my F Class guns, cause that's what I do !!!!!
Do I need to, I dont know, but all my load work is with molly so I stick to it.
Am I a Holden or a Ford man ?

I've heard that said too, but my own experience is consistently the opposite. Some people in this game don't always use sound methods to come to conclusions. In this case, maybe the velocity testing was done on different days, which even using the same chrono is not always reliable, or maybe it was assumed that velocity was higher with moly because scope elevation "come-ups" were less. There are often other variables at work which are not taken into account, and which can dramatically alter results.

You're doing the right thing by asking. And I agree that you won't need to moly your current 30 cal barrel.

Cheers mate. My rifle does shoot darn nice so far but it was a way to get some more velocity and therefore better consistancy with 155gr projies in my 26" barrel. I'm pushing max loads at the moment.

Hey Bruce
I have try ed the B/N but I did not like the results, 115 DTac's @ 3200 fps " Poooof" so I sold them off, mate runs them slower so there OK, but I recon they leave copper in the barrel real bad.
So I'll stick to my Molly LOL ](*,)

quick,
boron nitride is a dry lubricant used on bullets in a similar way to moly disulphide.
david tubb is a proponent of it, offering his dtac bullets thus coated.
a google search and a search on 6br will give info.
if you are interested in moly, you will have to try b/n to compare.
