John, I don't think I ever mentioned anything about excessive prizes etc, all I said or alluded to, was that clubs should at least offer badges to 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

I have also been around for quite a few years and well remember a number of professional C & B grade fullbore shooters that were quite prepared to drop a few points where necessary to ensure a badge but to also remain within their grade.

F Open is ungraded so at least that problem is alleviated.

If at the end of the day, only three f openers turned up, then I'm sure that they would all shoot to the best of their ability and they will know if they really deserved a badge or not.

I have been to quite a few shoots over the years where fullbore C grade have been handed prizes left, right and centre and never a word said, all about promoting the sport.

I know very little about your relationship with Castlemaine, have no recollection of insisting on a general minimum of 3 badges, and your criticism of Castlemaine is still unfair. Do you expect them to offer 3 badges after having fields of 2 shooters for the last 3 years????

PS: Just remembered the 3 badge requirement for the Vic F-Open series in 2006-8, but that was in return for a guaranteed attendance, with a penalty clause to compensate the host club. There is no such guaranteed attendance for PMs generally. So its not relevant to this discussion.

In fairness to Castlemaine, I think you're going to have to give them a list of names prior to the shoot and ask them to put on additional badges on that basis. Given what's happened over the last 3 years, I'd be offering one badge too.

At this stage, I must advise that I won't be there this year, too many family commitments, however, I would love to be there.

Alan, since I started this, if Castlemaine RC, could let me know the cost of two extra f open badges, then I donate them.

Now, how about some f open shooters?

another chicken/egg buster we did in s.a. was to guarantee clubs a certain attendance of f open shooters back in the day.
more than once this got the ball rolling, with the clubs rising to the occasion and with the shooters rising to the occasion.
offering to buy badges for clubs has met with mixed success.
one club happily accepted the offer, and things turned around.
another, after initially accepting the offer, did a backflip and refused to run open at all that year.
good food is always a drawcard. this often puts rural clubs at an advantage.

Danny are you sitting down they cost about 12 bucks so as you would understand having 2many badges could kill an OPM financially :roll:

As Bruce mentioned before they can always make more badges if Nos. dictate and forward them on.

Our badges cost $16 last year and seem to go up every year. That's the cost of buying local

I think the best way of awarding late badges is to have prepared voucher notes with the club letterhead, which can be filled in, signed, and awarded at the normal time.

When second is also last, a badge is meaningless in my opinion. When the number of badges on offer (presented) equal or exceed the number of attendees in the grade or division, the concept of competition becomes meaningless & performance is demeaned.
