New / Old Rifle

Post by Cameron Mc »

I have had these bits in the cupboard for some time now, decided to assemble and put it to use.

Rifle is based on Hall Model B action. Made in 1981. Currently has the original Hart 308 barrel fitted in 1981 and fired 300rds since.
I have a couple of good used 6mm barrels that will be put to use.

Just need to finish stock and glue in action.

That's a very beefy action. Some would say I'm not qualified to judge what is a good looking stock, but if I was, that one would certainly get a prize.

Danny, the cupboard is getting low on stock now...

Al, that action is 8" x 1.75" . Very well made. Only 2 lugs too :)

The stock came from Bill Shehane.

cam,
those hall actios had a very good reputation for fit, finish, fine tolerances and correctness.
a rifle to be proud of.
who did the bedding and inletting, and who will glue it?
what type of glue, and any info on prep before gluing?
keep safe,
bruce.

Well done Cameron.

He's so impressed with the two lugs, he didn't even use the "p" word  .

Bruce

I inletted and bedded the action with Devcon. I used pillars but I don't think this was necessary as the stock is super strong.

I glue in with high strength Araldite. A fine coating to the action and the bedding surfaces. Slowly tighten screws to let all air escape. Screws are only lightly tightened. I have the barrel removed when doing this so there is no stress on the action.

Prepare surfaces to be glued with a light going over with 400 grit. Then clean and clean with acetone. Good preparation is vital.
I have never had an action let go.

Alan, we have got his mind elsewhere :)

a lovely rifle cam.
i am envious.
unlike many, i believe strongly in glue ins if done properly and stress free.
i also believe that if a torque wrench is required to do up action screws consistently, there is a fault in std bedding. this is a failsafe test for stress free.
keep safe,
bruce.

I will use it for Open only. 308 barrel is 1-12" twist with long throat so I will use up some heavy sierra's at club shoots.
