Flying with Fire Arms

As you all know, I do a lot of flying with firearms. Each time booking my rifle case in and purchasing a piece of excess baggage to do so.

I have just found out the Qantas will allow firearms to travel as a free additional baggage allowance, because their rules state that ammo and rifle must travel separately. Therefore because of their rules we must always carry two baggage pieces. This has been in place since February.

If you have problems, ask to speak to the Duty Manager.

A lot of the ground staff are unaware of this and they tried - unsuccessfully - to get me for excess baggage in both directions when I went to Perth in September. I'd advise carrying a hard copy of this policy along with the other documentation. I will in future.

My current Approval to carry Firearms and Ammuniton from Qantas says you can travel with ammunition in your rifle case providing it's in a separate compartment within that case. The exception is Sth Africa.

Hi James, There was never pre-approval required for firearms and having the word "Firearms" on the
approval letter was causing some issues so we removed it. So far there haven't been any issues.
The ammunition can be placed inside the firearms case except for when travelling to South Africa.
