SSAA re-opens Buchan Rifle Range.

Post by Norm »

Here is some information for those that are interested. The Buchan Rifle Range, formerly a VRA range was closed due to lack of interest and members.

The SSAA has worked to have the range re-opened and is having a grand opening on the 20th of January. :D

I wish them all the best and hope that it is a success.

Hi Norm,

That's good news it is operational again.

A pity that there weren't any VRA members willing to keep it going. I know that Arthur (Buchan member) used to travel to a number of prize meetings back in the ninety's, and as a Moe member at the time, we had a club shoot at Buchan back then too.

I remember the BBQ that consisted of a bed frame above hot coals, and incredible chunks of meat that went down very well on the day.

For those that haven't shot there, it is a fairly closed in range with bush on the left, and lighter bush on the right thinning out into a padock. I think they go back past 600 yards?

Hopefully they can put on shoots from 300 yards onwards as time progresses.

That is good news for East Gippsland shooters!

When they get the range sorted out and longer distances are possible, I hope to attend a few shoots and maybe organise a group to go down and have a VRA-SSAA comp.
I will put the idea to tham and see what they think.

As a member of both organisations it would be a good exercise to keep in touch with other forms of rifle shooting.
Who knows a few of them may like to try F-Class some day.

Here's some photos from a shoot held at Buchan nearly 10 years ago. The 900yd mound is very close to the road - you almost have to pull your feet up if a vehicle goes past. Its not a real busy road though. I left my bolt on the mound in the previous visit  , and Arthur went down late that night to retrieve it.

PS. The Chev Impala is Bruce Houstons's. Anyone who knows Bruce will know that he is rarely early for anything.

Interesting photo's Alan.
That headding "We had a very good attendance from the Rosedale Clubs - the annual pilgrimage to Buchan looks like its here to stay." This comment looks like it may have put the moz on the range!

I have some updates information on the new range set up. Here is what they plan on having....... Looks like 800m is the distance limit.

*************************************************************

When everything is worked out we’ll be able to go out to 800m. With all legal calibres of rifles, pistols,Black Powder & shotguns. We have a safety template extending out to 8 kms. We will be shooting all SSAA disciplines & others as interest grows. At present it will be either benches or the old mounds .
A few amenities are still needed including a good water supply and functioning toilets for starters.
