Brett- Yes Bill is a bit cocky in that regard. His 308's shoot very well but alot of his results come from superior wind reading. Plus when you have fired as many rounds as he does, you would want to be ahead of the pack too.
My 6.5mm was "doomed" from the start and because that was his opinion, others thought the same. End of the day Im smiling because the rifle shoots. My 284S will be the same you watch
Nevermind, like you say,the beauty of FO is run what you want and enjoy it. And if you want to be competitive make sure you sabotage shauns ammo Might as well start the sledging and shit stirring before the queens now
I was thinking, we should run a test. Get two rifles, say a 6mm variant and 7mm and have them matched ballisticly, like exact it within 0.1 or similar of wind drift at a given distance and do a string if shots fired at the exact same time with the same aim point and see what drifts overall more. Take the wind reading outa it and just let he bullet tell us what happens. What you all reckon?
I think Brett's 243AI would be the best as it has the best chance of matching 7mm drift. We need to make sure that the ballistic program is the same too.
Best and most simple thing to do would be two rifles and two setups, two electronic targets. Set gun to the zero wind for each rig. Fire 5 shots- one every 10 seconds at the same time from each rig both aiming dead centre X at 1000yds. Then shooters swap rigs and repeat. Proof will be in the pudding.
We can do it here with the 6.5 and 6mm's, no 7's yet. Unless Bob Kinnear comes up to perth or out here. Later in the year once I have the 7mm we can try it again.
We did a similar test a few years back with a 6.5/284 vs a 6BRX. Both rifles were shot on report and the targets scored . It was interesting to see a similar wind drift between the two but this was before electronic targets so it was only a visual comparison . I think from memory it was done at 900yds and conditions were fairly mild. You would need to do this a lot to get any sort of real world data to say that one has an advantage over another. But if it gives me an excuse to have a shoot i"m in for sure And count me in for the 900 down your way Brad!!!
BRETT B wrote:Hey Alan , you know i run a 243AI and i have also had a 300WM i used to shoot in F open as well. I have seen what either calibre can group like and was wondering what the 7mm grouping ability was like. We don"t have anyone over here shooting the big 7MMs so can"t compare anything!! Am just curious as to how tight you can get the 7"s to group. If i have the load right i can put 10 into 3/4 inch at 300 of a Bench during testing , My 300 would struggle to get close to that ( maybe 1-1/4 at best) . So with the 7mm being in the middle of the 2 , it would be good to get some real world data on grouping ability for the 7"s !!! Traditionally the bigger cals could never group as tight as the smaller ones but with new technology in bullets and barrels it seems they have leaped forward in accuracy!!
Sorry to go way back on this one but I think it deserves a little support. I will go along with Alans comments - I rarely shoot for group size so when I am load developing I don't watch flags too much and just judge vertical. I will say over the last few years I have seen my 284 vertical shrink. I don't know why but assume it has a lot to do with the quality of the bullets but perhaps it is also barrels etc (maybe technique???). Two years ago I used to say you shoot BR's for records and 7mm for championships now I am not so sure..... 7mm all the way for me thanks
It sure is interesting. I'm still contemplating getting the 300WSM barrel but the current stock on the 6x47L probably wouldn't be to suitable. It's a Shehane Baby Tracker. But awesome for the 6mm for the 29rds I've shot through it so far.
I wouldn't mind us WA guys getting together and comparing Bobs 7RSAUM against the 6mm's we have. Maybe we are weird but we all seem to have 6mm and a few with 6.5mm aswell, could be our conditions or alike it we are behind as F-Open has been quiet for some time.
Brad,
I think the weekend of June 30 could be good fun mate. We should organise it all. I'm just not sure in home for that. Let me check.....Yes I am. It's a 400yd shoot on at swanbourne that weekend.
Brett
I remember that test between the 6BR and the 6.5x284, that was a long time ago !!!! In my opinion the 6mm's might have a small edge in grouping ability but the a good 7 isn't far behind, and at the longs it does have an advantage, I've shot them all and the I probably wont replace my 6.5x47 once I wear it out.
Hey Matt , Its scary how long ago that was now i think about it !! damm gettin old With the amount of different cals you have had over the years There is no doubt that the 7"s must work if you continue to use them!!! I am building a new Sleaved Rem for Open and will be doing a lot of load testing to make it tack drive so i can give these 7"s a good run for their money when i head your way next year All jokes aside i am really keen to get next to a good 7mm and see what they shoot like. My 243AI has always been very consistent and is hard to go away from but i am always open to try something new !!!
