Post by saum2 »

Anyone using JLK in 80gns for .223? If so where are you seating them? Jammed or jump.

Every Rifle is different --some like jam, some like jump, some like little jump, some like lots of it.
You just have to put the time in to find the sweet load and seating depth.

Being a VLD shape projectile I went straight for 15 thou jam which is where I do load development for all VLD's. Seeing quite a few loads for 223's with 2208 in the mid 25gr mark I went for 24.8-25.2gr in 0.2gr increments and shot a 3 shot replicated ladder looking at vertical. Range was 300m. Primers were coming out flat so that would suggest its max load in my gun but results were promising- X ring elevation. Will find out the spread tonight when I run the results through the computer. Shooting 300m this weekend so will be able to see if what ever load shot the flattest can also agg.

During the test I had 25.2gr shoot 3 shots within 7mm vertically. That was calm conditions. Later on the 24.8gr shot 3mm in conditions that were showing vertical in odd shots with other shooters. Its definitely around the right spot.

Brad,
What velocity are you getting in your rifle? I have some JLK's but I am waiting for my new rifle to use them.

No idea Scott, I still havent laid out the coin for a magnetospeed. But its only a 26 inch barrel so Im guessing around the 2800-2900fps bracket. Havent had much to do with 223's aside from finding this hated sierras jumped a while back so I cut it down to make a varmint barrel.

Brad,

You wont loose that much with a 26" barrel, i think about 28" is ideal.

Seddo,
I'm getting 3100f/s + but you don't want to go there. I'm now cutting back the powder and trying for around 3000f/s .
I hope the speed is accurate. Used a new Magneto-speed chrony to check what was a very accurate combination. I was using 2206H,30" barrel, ADI cases, no pressure signs but I wouldn't want to go any faster. cases were fine even after 3 firings with the hot load.

Geoff,

The 8 twist I amusing at the moment is about 27" and I am getting 2900 with 80gr amax, my next one is 28" and I will try and push it with Bergeers and JLK's but I don't think I will try for more than 3000. I have some lapua brass sitting there for the new one and I think it will have a slightly higher capacity than the adi brass so fingers crossed I can get 3000.
