are 700 rem actions good for target outfit buildup

Post by jerryatric »

hi . ok so I have a few omarks here with adaptors ect & was going to build a open class 6.5 outfit . have spotted a Remington 700 action & bolt with cerokote ect & wondering if this would be better / more accurate action than the omarks to build the 6.5 onto .. considering things like smoother action . better target stocks available ect ect . ANY thoughts would be appreciated before I dive in & buy something that is no better than the omark actions I already have ?. thanks - thinking 6.5x47 cal .

If I was going to build an f class rifle on a rem700 again, I would be getting it fully blueprinted and sleeved in a stolle sleeve. A Rolle is a good target action.

NO
By the time you pay for blue printing, bushing firing pin hole, sleeving the action, etc, etc ,etc you would be better off buying a Barnard model P action and building your F Open rifle on that.

MAYBE I should also say IF I HAD $ 1400 to $2,500 to spend on a action I would go out & buy a nice action , BUT WHAT in trying to find out is IS the rem 700 a better option then the omark . factory omark to factory rem700 . IM not competing for Australia fella,s . im only shooting it at local range - where ive received plenty of 1st place troghys using my omark . JUST wanting to know whats the better action for my purpose - omark v rem 700 . all I want is nice maddco barrel / nice target stock & smoother action .thanks

the rem is better because it has 2 lugs and the superior extraction that goes with.
there is plenty of stuff like triggers an scope bases to fit rems.
there are second hand stolles around if you look.
you could maximize benefit by barrel block bedding it.

Her is my Remington 700 long action that I just had fitted with its new 32" .308 barrel.
It is a 1 : 12 twist barrel and I intend to shoot it in F-Standard and T/TR.
Its action is over 30 years old and quite slick to use if a bit worn. It has been very accurate with other barrels it has worn over the years and has had some work done to the action but not a lot.

I don't expect it to be a World beater but it gets me shooting in .308 competition for a low price when I am not shooting my more expensive rifles in F-Open.

Accuracy is not that important in F-Standard anyway...

I wouldn't suggest buying one for F Class BUT if you have one sitting in the safe it is another option, as previous posters have pointed out by the time you buy one and then do any required work (may or may not need work), actions like the Pierce or Barnard are a much better option.

matt,
you forgot the stole with it's big flat bedding area, light weight, and great stiffness, as well as good looks.

bruce.
p.s. the stiller python is the same.

If you already have the Rem action on hand, Build off it. A blue printing jobs should cost around 250-300 depends on who does it and if you can afford it, get a PTG bolt to go with it aswell. My FO rig is built off a R700 action and shoots very well.

If you dont have one, a Peirce is a good lower cost option as they are around 1150 for the single shot action but then you need scope base and trigger.

To the original question if you werent going to buy an action and had a rem and an omark there, I would use the rem hands down.

If you are going to buy one, then yes look at something like a pierce at minimum, or a barnard, stolle, stiller, defiance, lawton, bat etc etc. Usually plenty of actions around second hand if you dont want to buy new.

Some years ago an independent rigidity test was carried out in USA & was reported in Precision Shooter magazine. This test included all of the then available American actions & a Barnard "S" action (the small one). The only action that came out stiffer than the "S" was the Hall model M. The Barnard "S" is considerably lighter than a Barnard "P" & neither are made out of pot metal which is not a very stiff material & you do not need to mess around with epoxy bedding & multiple barrelled actions will fit into one stock.
Having said all that, I think Stolle, Nesika & Pierce actions are very well made & work beautifully even though they are somewhat handicapped by only having 2 locking lugs. :D

keith,
you still have to admit that the barnard is pretty ugly around the back end.
