Is Lapua becoming conservative?

I've been musing about what powder to use for my 30/284 & browsing the various manuals I've downloaded for 30/06 loads. Good old ADI has exactly the same numbers in every copy I have, whilst Viht has dropped their recommendations from just under 3% to nearly 7%, the average being around 4%.

I recall hearing a while back now that the formula for the double based powders had been changed to be more barrel friendly, but the highest variation is for their single based number, N160. As a user of N550 for match rifle, I've noticed difference in performance between the batches up to 2006 & the last one supplied by the former agent (2009), the latter being almost 100 fps off the pace compared with earlier powders, but surely that wouldn't warrant such a huge step back in charge?

Any thoughts?

John, I'm using 2209 and 2213SC in my 30-06AI with 200 & 215gr hybrids. After some considerable testing, (not helped by loose scope rings) I prefer using 2209.

I have nodes at 2910fps for the 200gr bullets and 2800fps for the 215gr hybrids. Interestingly the higher BC gives the 215's better ballistics (less wind drift) than the 200's even though they are travelling 100+ fps slower.

I had a lot of success using 2213SC in the 284 Shehane but prefer 2209 in the 30 cal.

Funny, Ian, I've been sitting here, looking at ADI, VV & Hodgdon data & just came to the conclusion that 2209 was a good place to start. It also means that I can save my N550 for the .308.

John 2213SC maybe subject to the effects of humidity also usally causing more carbon build-up.
