Butt behaviour!?

Dirty buggers! Mind outta the gutter.

I'm modifying an old stock of mine and adding features that will enhance its freecoil and tracking ability.

The butt is parallel to the forend already though it has a square toe and is tapered from the palm swell to the recoil pad. I've straightened the taper and it works beautifully, especially compared to the way it was.
I'm now wondering how differently it would behave if I rounded the toe instead of leaving it square. I suspect that it would almost rule out the need to settle the rear bag, but then there'd be more surface area rubbing the ears and the toe would be resting on the harder base of the bag.

I think most of the brand name stocks have a rounded toe.

Just wondering if anyone has an opinion on my butt?

Denis,

I don't believe rear bags are designed with the intention of having the toe of the buttstock riding on the seam - rather the ears and stock should be matched such that the only contact is between the ears and the stock. If not then more efforts would have been made to smooth the seams (with a cordura cover for example).

But the BR people would be able to speak with more authority about this.

To my understanding, the long underside of the butt is the toe.

Alan, that's been my opinion too. I find with my flat toe stocks I need to put some effort into settling the butt in the rear bags ears before I start a detail to eliminated gradual settling and inturn the error that it can cause.

I see other shooters using round toes stocks that look to ride on the bags stitches and they don't seem to worry about settling bags and still achieve good vert and fluid tracking.

I see that SEB's latest F-class stock has a wide rear plate under the butt with rails along the side. He obviously likes the ear theory.

Denis IMO that the Butt Stock shape should match the rear bag as close as possible the stock has nothing to do with settling of the bag sand what you need to achieve is a consistent friction when the stock moves rear ward under recoil.

the to is the pointy bit at the bottom of the butplate, and the heel is the top of the buttplate.
not sure what the underneath line of the stock is called.
there is also a theory that the underline of a stock sloping 3 degrees works well.
you either make the stock fit the bag, as Richard said, or you make the bag fit the stock.
my own preference is for the stock to rest on the bag, with the ears just contacting enough tho control any side motion when tracking.

I've had both and can't really say I've found any difference in bag ssettling or tracking even when using the same rear bag.

Somehow, hours after the original post, I had a sinking feeling in my gut, suspicious that that photo might emerge.

It's a tactic to induce ill feeling in the competion. It's worth at least 1 point per shooter.

we have a guy in our club who wears stubbies which seem to always be at the level of his hip joints.
when he shoots, it is clearly obvious that he is a "crack" shot.

Josh, it tracks well enough for him to be getting hard , to impossible, to beat, depending on how his day is going.
Hopefully he will be shooting at the Muckadilla OPM today and tomorrow where there should be a pretty good field lining up. We will have to wait for updates from Graham Sells.
