Do you have a form for equipment?
I'm going to the QLD queens and don't mind doing some data collection.

Tim,

I'll get back to this tonight and come up with something for everyone to comment on. Thanks for the offer.

Depending on what my surgeon tells me next Tuesday, I am pretty confident that I can put my hand up to help with a good share of it.
If he lets me start "weight bearing" within limits as expected, then chasing up about 50% of the F Class shooters for a thorough equipment list would be just about the right amount of weight for someone to bear. Especially someone who is bored shitless at present and intends to get to the Queens, but won't be a hope in hell of actually shooting. :D
Extreme accuracy and precision shooting at long range can be a very addictive pastime.

Well you could shoot Creedmoor style, Laying on your back is not weight bearing on your leg at all.
I had a major shoulder reconstruction 3 years ago and not only was I not allowed to shoot for 6 bloody long months by the surgeon, but, I also wasn't allowed to drive and, that really peed me off. :(

Back on topic.
As for calibre, what is so terribly wrong with the 'umble' 308W :?:
It is interesting to note how well FTR shooters perform against FO.
Shooting a lighter weight rifle off a bipod is giving heaps away to the belly benchrest shooters with their gold plated pedestal rests, :P yet the scores do not show a huge differential.(The majority of FS shooters have, unfortunately, also gone with this gear ).
My suggestion is for a 1 in 11 or 12 twist barrel in 308W with a long throat.
Use a bipod as you save $$$$ over a pedestal rest, and, you do not need a forklift to access/leave the mound, also you get to learn how to control recoil better(how the rifle reacts when fired). 8)
My chambers are all long throat so Sierra 2156 projectiles sit about 40 thous in the case(stops the worry about neck tension though  ).
Berger Hybrids seat over 60 thou in case and shoot extremely well. Berger also recommend a minimum twist of 1 in 12 for the 155gr Hybrids.
I could, at a pinch, shoot up to approx. 200 grain projectiles which means I can shoot FS, FTR and F0 and still be competitive.

No reason why you cant run the 308. But you have more margin for error in wind reading if you use something with better ballistics. Thats why I highlight the importance of wind reading with the FS calibers or 6/6.5mm's before running a 7mm. If you miss a condition bad enough it doesnt matter what cal you use, your going to drop points...

One of the best things about having one gun and a pet load is that you become very accustomed to the how it is affected by the wind. Chopper shot and coached 308s for many years, and he's often been heard to say that he over-reads the wind with very high BC bullets. So if you settle for a 6.5x47 with 140 gn bullets at about 2830 for example, and maintain that sort of load, you're going to give very little away to the 7mms, particularly in string shooting. For Bisley style, or where conditions are changing drastically, then high performance matters.
