6x47 Lap Your thoughts
Hi it's cold outside not a lot to do and my thoughts start drifting.I was talking to a shooter the other day and he told me a little about he's 6x47 Lap and howe it shoots so well from 300 to 1000 but it was a quick conversation. Now l have a Dasher and it works well. But just wondering about a 6x47 The good and the bad Barrel Life ??.I have a 6.5x47 Lap in the pipe-works but the 6x47 pricked my interest a little. It sounds like it will push the 115 gr along very well.Is it any better at the longs than the 6.5.Thanks .

Hi Brad this may well be right.I like the 6.5 but if it is blowing hard then the big stuff comes into its own 7WSM and the like. But if it not to bad (Weather wise) I'm not completely convinced that bigger is better. And maybe having a cal that he can shoot from 300 all the way back might be handy interesting tho.

I have shot a 6x47L for the last year and half. It can be finicky to tune but when its on its on. I have rechambered both my barrels to 6x47 Improved. To try it out and run less pressures.
If you have a dasher already and a 7mm or similar I wouldnt do a 6x47L. No need to.

Your not the only person I've heard say that it can be finicky to tune

I run a 6 x 47 Lap and it is a real hoot to shoot. I also run some 7mm barrels and confess that I normally stick to the 284 Win for OPMs or bigger events, but for Club level it is a very sweet calibre to shoot.
Mine has been very easy to tune a load for, and with effectively zero recoil in. 9.5 kg plus F Open rifle it is very sweet to shoot.
I hunted mine along a bit, using 2209 to get over 3100 fps and my first barrel was absolutely toasted in just 1150 rounds. The first 5"-6" of the barrel is absolutely firecrazed and cracked and accuracy had disappeared when I replaced it.
I now use the rifle as a switch barrel, and have one of the Bartleins chambered in 6 x 47. Having finally run out of VLDs, I am about to start using 105gr Hybrids. Current plans got put on hold with a broken leg !
I haven't tried them myself, but have read plenty of US based stories re 1 in 8" twist barrels not stabilizing the 115gr bullets. My Bartlein (and the original Krieger) are both 1in 8 so I was just happy to send the 105gr pills down range at a decent speed and enjoy the shooting.
I realistically expect a short life from my 6 x 47 Lap barrels now, but will look for a rechamber around the 750-800 round mark, and a replacement at around the 1500 round mark.
Ben Ferrara in Sydney, has done a lot of work with the 6 x 47 Lap and I am fairly sure that he also accepts short barrel life (compared to some calibres) as an acceptable price to pay for the joy of shooting one in competition.

Extreme accuracy and precision shooting at long range can be a very addictive pastime.

Michael,
Not with me behind it !! I can remember telling my gunsmith (Phil Jones from Redback) that I could often keep McEwans, Lewis , Bell and co .........the well known F open shooters in SE Qld that were regularly winning ranges and Events, honest....out to about 600, but from 700 to 1000 yards I was never any threat to them.
So Phil built me a 284 Win and I managed to scare them occasionally all the way out to 1000, which certainly made me feel good.
I had never been on a rifle range in my life till just on three years ago, so realistically my wind reading is pretty damn poor , and has got a long, long way to go and a hell of a lot to learn.
I would be very surprised if well experienced shooters like Ben Ferrara hadnt managed to do well at longer ranges with the 6x 47 Lap , because it is inherently such a very accurate cartridge. I am simply not a good enough wind reader to be any sort of reference point for the cartridge.
I just love to shoot it.

It will hold its own if you read the wind. if you look at the 1000yd scores from the nationals, I got up with a 56.4 at the final 1000yd and beat a few who run the big 7mms. That whole shoot the rifle performed awesome, I just got lost a few times. its all wind reading at the end of the day.
big thing I found with this cal was keeping it clean and it will shoot. the carbon build up from 2209 was such that I had to clean every two ranges. I did that and it performs.

Or every 6 months if you shoot OPM and a queens or two. I took my one to the nationals with about 750 rds on it. Shot awesome but got a rechamber at 1000rds and expect another 1000 then thats it. Fireform after that.
