I will have to pay more attention next queens (next week) , this might be something i try next year. For now, i am happy with the 260 ackley

Andrew, its exactly the same as a 284 win just with a bit of case taper blown out (about 10 thou I think according to accurateshooter and adds just over 3gr capacity). At a quick glance you might not see the difference- might need a set of verniers to see the difference. I recall seeing somewhere that Bill Shehane did it only for extraction purposes not to try and push velocity. Alot of people do, but its proven that pushing the 284 brass is pretty detrimental to case life, and not many people are winning big matches by pushing a 284 or 284 shehane hard.
"Can't push a 180gr projectile faster than 2959fps at rifle ranges with a 3500 ft-lbs limit on muzzle energy.
Can't push a 180gr Berger Hybrid faster than 3015.5fps at Connaught under G1 ballistic coefficient and muzzle velocity restrictions.
So it also depends where you want to go shooting locally/overseas; and how quickly you want to start using the next barrel. "
Gosh, isn't that fast enough ? you will just burn the barrel out if you get greedy
Too true Andrew.
That is why I settled for 2950 fps in the SAUM, as it was easy on barrels and brass. And what do you know, it meets the power restrictions that are starting to appear on some ranges.
More luck than good planning, as the barrel dictated the speed!
My SAUM runs at the same speed as bartman007. I chose the SAUM because I wanted to run the 180's at 2950 and not blow out the primer pockets as with the .284 at the high. speed. So no need to over think pressure/range restrictions. No problems getting dies for the SAUM, Midsouth shooting supplies have everything in stock. Some issues with brass, .300 saum brass still requires resizing, so make some from WSM, it's easy, just need to think outside the box.
I made some forming dies to convert WSM to SAUM but there is one issue. The web is larger on the WSM brass and requires a slightly larger base in the chamber. Easily done of course but is a bit of a hassle.
To my thinking, if I can't run 180 vlds (7mm) at about the same speed as the 140s (6.5mm) that I use now (2950), its probably not worth the time and energy working up another rifle. The 260 ai is starting to look pretty good and i think i will use it for a while and collect the bits i need for a SAUM, a few months down the track. In other words the difference between a 6.5 at 2950 and a 284 at 2800 is not going to mean as much as some good wind reading. So i guess ill put a magnum bolt on my wishlist ......

Andrew,
Ammoguide doesn't have a 7mm/284 Shehane unfortunately, but I thought you might enjoy a couple of other comparisons.
Cam McEwan could probably actually photograph them all together in real life, including the Shehane coz he has photographed everything that I have ever heard of, once before. Tony
Extreme accuracy and precision shooting at long range can be a very addictive pastime.
The reason I didn't do this earlier is that the difference between Shehane and standard 284 is barely noticeable. In case you can't see it the Shehane is approx 0.010" wider at the shoulder (i.e. less body taper)
I will probably try and build a 7 saum on a savage target action. I have purchased another action and i am lining up a magnum boltface now, savage does not make a short action push feed magnum bolt head, but pac tool and gauge can, provided they will send it to me (homeland security permitting), otherwise i have ordered a long action magnum boltface which can be 'cut down' to fit the standard bolt by my trusty gunsmith ....
