.308 to 6mm

Ok, so my Omark has been sitting in the safe for nearly 4 months now. The reason being I have a Savage in the same calibre - .308.

To counter keeping it in the safe for too long I am looking to convert it to a 6mm. I do not want to sell it as it is my first ever gun.

So the question goes to all the technically proficient people out there. What kind of work is required to make the conversion possible?

I know it requires a new barrel. I have a Nielsen adapter.
I believe it does not require a new PTA.

I am not looking to do it myself but just want to know about the process and the cost before I make my decision "firm".

you won't require a PTA but you are required to register the new caliber with FAR, it's something your gunsmith/dealer can do easily, they just send off some paperwork as far as i know

Does it matter? Will there be a cost difference in making the change?

I believe this question is out of scope, at least for the moment, unless there is a major financial difference for the change.

Talk to your local gun smith about the cost and what your options are. I used Matt P for a barrel change from 308 to 6mmBR. In 6mm there are a couple of options such as BR, Dasher BX etc. Best discussed with an expert.

Matt P is my preferred/go-to guy when it comes to gun-smithing. I just don't want to keep going to him with my mind still in the limbo on what I want to do.

I may catch him tomorrow in Bathurst, if he is shooting there. In the meantime, I will have to go through some research.

Yes, Matt P will be the one to see. I would say he will steer you towards a 6 Dasher or 6 BR and you cant go wrong with either.
Apart from a set of dies, there is no added cost in screwing a 6mm in. Cases and barrels are consumables, so these are not a cost consideration. 6BR cases and 6mm pills are slightly cheaper than 308. Add in slightly less powder costs and a switch to 6mm will work out economically in the long run.

Ever the pedant I'll point out that if you consume more consumables that's a bit of a cost consideration. Being a .30cal shooter I've no idea if any of the 6s are hungrier than others.

A 6BR has similar barrel life to a 308 and uses 30gns of powder. A 6 Dasher will have a slightly shorter life and use around 33 gns of powder. You will also nerd to fireform each case whether or not you add this to the cost.

I managed to talk to Matt and Kieth Hills at the same time today, lucky me, and both of them had the same thing to say: if it is the first F-Open rifle, go for 6BR. Dashers etcs are for second/third F-Open rifles. Does make sense as the only thing to worry about is shooting them and not "nerding" up or "bulding" up anything.

Yes, I agree a 6BR is nice and simple, minimal brass prep, long barrel life, lovely to shoot. (and nerding up is more for more experienced F Open shooters )
