Single shot or not?

Post by dee cee »

My limited understanding tells me that using a single shot action is superior to those that arent.

But I can't help think that there must be non single shot actions that can keep up when the shooter does their bit.

Any opinions, stories, facts welcome.

Thanks guys and girls

Dual port or drop port isn't that different to a repeater, both have an extra cut-out that a single shot doesn't have necessarily.

There are also single-shots and there are single-shots. Don't forget the falling block/Farquharson type actions or McBros 50BMG/Vulcan50BMG/Wichita Mini Action or the interrupted thread breech if you like your arty.

Its called a remington 700. Probably one of the more well known actions adapted to f class shooting. Install a single shot follower and your cooking with gas.

I've seen the odd 1000 yard heavy gun with Mauser or the like actions hanging off the back of a clamped barrel.

I don't think there is a ton of difference between a single shot and repeaters etc...accuracy wise. I've got repeater actions that shoot every bit as good as my single shot actions.

Also you have to answer yourself a question. What are you building the gun for? If you want hardcore accuracy and your going for the groups to be in the .0xx's etc....then I would say go with the single shot.

I think the lock time of the bolt/firing pin assy. is more critical then weather it's a single shot action or a repeater.

Just my opinion.

All else being equal, then a single shot action will be better for F-Class. For example I believe there is a Barnard with a magazine. I wouldn't have one because (a) its probably slightly less rigid (b) it would require a platform to block the magazine opening (c) its probably more expensive. From the accuracy point of view, for the long heavy barrels we hang off our actions, rigidity must be important. Why else do they sleeve Remington 700s?

More bedding area with a single shot? Some single shot actions run 3 bedding screws that will also help support long heavy barrels. . . . . . . Which do help with accuracy :D
