Triangular barrels?

Post by Tim N »

Hi All,
Some time back I read a test on a remington 25-06 with one of their triangular barrels, according to the write up it was unusually accurate for a hunting weight rifle.
Has anyone experimented with a barrel this shape in a target rifle?
I guess one would have to be ordered from a barrel maker willing to do it?
Could be thinking too far"outside the square"

Remington VTR's have them and the couple I shot were ok but not outstanding. Tikka T3 varmint rifles were miles better.

More of a gimmick than anything else. :|

Hi Tim,

Is it April 1st again?

I can see one possible use for a triangular barrel, and that is as a tomato stake. But that might be an expensive solution to using simple timber ones :D

You have too much time on your hands

You that old, Peter?

If I were a cynic, I'd be betting that it's a Remington cheapskate alternative to fluting.

Could be half a square. Therefore inside the square. So no reason why it wouldn't shoot.

Leupold already have a peculiar shaped Riflescope with a non round lens shape.

Do you think it would be worthwhile developing a special triangular Riflescope.

With of course a triangular Graticule with 3 reference lines at 120 degrees just to drive people really crazy and allow for multidirectional wind settings.

I agree it's more of a gimmick than anything else. To me just a variation on fluting and trying to do something for sales etc.....

One of the guys here in the shop just put together a .260Rem. type target rifle. He machined the outside of the barrel with those triangle type flats on it to see how it shoots etc....It's built on a Remington action. Hasn't shot it yet. I don't expect it to shoot any differently than anything else.

I would rate Sako/Tikka barrels quality wise better then Remington's.

Hi Frank,
How can one soar like an eagle when surrounded by turkeys????
I for one will be interested to hear how the triangular barrel shoots.

Peter, I thought with your skills that you could handle on the fly multidirectional wind adjustments. It is us humble prawns that will have to continue with standard cross hairs.

Tim, it should sound like most other barrels............BANG!

If it sounds different, let me know.
