Setting up front and rear rests.

Post by Dave E »

Hi all,
This is my first post on here, so here goes. I haven't been shooting all that long but changed over from Fullbore to F class Std a little while ago due to a very painfull elbow. The equipment I'm using is a Mastin stock, Barnard action and a March scope. My rests consist of a Farley front rest and a Seb Bigfoot rear rest. I'd just like to get a few thoughts on how I should set up my rests as I seem to get a lot of movement which is undoubtedly affecting my accuracy. It seems that just about every time I fire I have to be constantly adjusting the feet of the Farley as they must be settling into the ground ?? I am constantly watching the level on my scope and adjusting the feet on the Farley accordingly. Also, I have noticed that the bottom of the butt doesn't fit right to the bottom of the rear rest. Does it have to rest in the bottom between the ears ?? Shooting a round and then having to remove it all off the mound only to set it up again a short time later for the next round is proving to be a challenge at the moment. Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks guys !! Cheers....Dave E :D

Come on Dave, F class is easy, just ask any TR shooter that hasn't tried it, you can't miss, front rest, rear rest etc etc

Ok, so you are starting with basic gear, just kidding.

Personally, I like to have the rear of my stock running on the stitches of the rear bag ie settled down as far as it can go but the others may differ.

Welcome to F Class

Cheers
Danny

I'm a stomper. I stand on what I can to get it into the ground. Then, with luck, it isn't going to move during the shoot. As far as the rear bag goes, it has to be compacted as far as it's going to before you shoot, otherwise you'll be forever adjusting your elevation to compensate for the bag settling. I kneel, grab an ear in each hand,& stretch them to the outside at the same time leaning as hard as I can on the bag until I've beat it into submission.

If you shoot on springy, grassed mounds as I do on Belmont, a base for your bag, with legal spikes & a non slip top is handy. Stomp that into the ground to. If you come across Paul Janso, he has one of the type I favour.

Hey, thanks for the advice John. Yes, I know Paul quite well. Actually, I was thinking of making exactly what you just described mate. Until we get some rain up here at the Mt. Vince range in Mackay, the ground is like concrete !! Bigger hammer required maybe ?? Eerrgg !! Thanks once again for the advice !! Cheers.

Hi Dave
Let me know when you are going to Mt Vince next and I will give you a run down of how I set up my gear and I will give you a try of Dave's rear bag rest.
I think by what you are saying you may have too much sand in your rear bag ears.
Cheers

Dave,

You mentioned needing to adjust the front rest, but you'll notice most of the suggestions have been about the rear rest. That's because with a heavy rest like the Farley, its unlikely to move unless you're being very gentle pushing the feet in. I agree with JohnK's advice, "stomp" things down hard, and pack your rear bag down well. I lift the butt off the rear bag several times and thump it down quite firmly. Some think this could damage the scope, but not in my experience of doing it many thousands of times, but it is best to this without the bolt in.

You didn't say - have you got F Class feet for the Farley rest?

Thanks for the replies guys !! Yes Alan, I agree. Maybe i'll have to show the Farley who's the boss and get "rugged" with it !! Funny thing is, I went shooting this morning using concrete benchrests and the same thing happened. Every shot or so I had to adjust the feet on the Farley to get my scope level. Yeh, I'm just not sure where the problem is coming from. To answer bsouthernau's question, yes, I have F class feet on the Farley. Actually, I rather enjoyed shooting off the concrete benchrests this morning rather than being down in the dirt and the ants !! Lol. Paul, i'll take you up on that offer next time I see you. You name the time and place and i'll be there, even if we're not shooting !! I need to sort this problem out as I'm guessing it's the root cause of my inaccuracy !! Cheers.

still getting problem on bench , your stock is torqueing over and every time it does it forces sand in front bag from right to left, so bag ends up pissed and you have to adjust front rest to keep rifle level . Maybe your problem.

Dave
You can get a replacement bag with a hard top which fixed the same problem with mine.

Ratshot, I think you're right on the money mate !! The Whidden plate that is secured to the rail under my forestock has a raised edge down both sides underneath. After several shots it's leaving 2 parallel impressions in the bag and it's obvious that sand is moving inside it. The bag is also looking slightly wedged shaped looking from side to side. Tim, to answer your post, I have thought about just that and considered making my own from a nylon block. Yup, every time I fire I can feel the ol' .308 trying to torque. Slowly but surely I think I'm getting on top of this problem with the help of you guys !! Thanks !!
