Rod guide for cleaning rod.

Post by Anthony H »

Hi.

Just a quick question on what rod guides people are using, or not using as the case might be.
I have a new .308 Barnard P action on the way and I need some info on whether a rod guide is the way to go and if so what brands are good.

Cheers.

Anthony.

I have two types and both of them are great.

One made by John Cooper, made from Delron http://oneoffprecision.com.au/products-2/

One made by Phil Mastin also made from Delron http://mastingunsmith.com.au/index.html

Both made specifically for the Barnard P, you can buy them direct or generally from any of the NSWRA / QRA etc etc gun shops, well worth the small expense.

First I will say something is better than nothing!

I like the delrin guide that came with my Barnard P.

I've used others like the Sinclair model etc..

I really like the Lucas bore/rod guide. Take a look at it once. Not sure how to get you one down by you but again worth looking at.

They don't come with one, it is sold as an extra.

Does Barnard make one to fit a 284, or just a 308?

Mine is for a .284win.

I ordered it with the action.

I'll take a picture of it and post it later.

They standard guides are for 308 and 223. They may make specials if requested but 308 and 223 was all I saw when I was last in their shop. They don't normally come with a bare action to my knowledge. Plus they don't have the o-ring seal. Well, didn't when I bought a 223 one but wasn't worried about the seal as I only bought it as a guide for my borescope.
For my 284 I think I got 1 from Sinclairs. I have also bought guides off Possum Hollow. He also makes the type with the second sleeve which is close to rod diameter and which slides into the back of the main sleeve and centres the rod.
