Molly coated projectiles question/help

Post by cameron22 »

Hello

I normally shoot 167g lapua scenars out if my 308w @44.4gr of 2208
Now the issue I left my run to late to get more before the shoot this weeknd but have got given the same projectile but silver coated (aka Molly).

Should I run same charge and hope thay shoot well or bump up it a few grains to account for the lost speed of the Molly coated bullets.

If so any one got a idea on how much to bump it up.

I know this is not the ideal situation at all but desperate.

I seem to remember when I was shooting moly 155 SMKs and went bare I ended loading somewhere around 1.25gr less for the same velocity. So I guess in your case the reverse applies. As always that advise comes with the all care but no responsibility rider! I was using home moly coated projectiles which may or may not have been as slippery as the Lapua Silverjackets. Your current load looks safe with say a max of maybe 46grains 2208 so you have a wee bit of room to move safely up. When I was shooting the moly 155 SMKs I was somewhat over what the ADI guide recommended (conservative?) with no pressure issues.

Cameron,

If you have plenty of the molyed bullets I would condition the barrel with 5 or 10 of them before the shoot, because the velocity change will not be instant.

Yeah I have allowed 10 for fouling.

After looking back it seems I shoot them when I first got the rifle and they shot well at 44.5g according to my notes so I loaded them up last night.

I find with my rifles that you need to ensure the barrel is very clean to start with either going to or from moly.
