284 loads?

Hi there,

Just wondering if someone can provide some guidance please - I am starting loads for the 284 using 168gn Nosler Custom Comps, Lapua brass, CCI primers and RE17 powder. Any recommendations?

I'm using 50.1gn of 2209, 180 vld's, .005" jam for 2820 fps from a 32" barrel. Lots of air gap in the case but shoots very tight.

Have you broken the barrel in and fireformed any brass yet ?
I had good success fire forming using a faster powder, AR2208, on the advice of a very experienced Victorian gentleman........who wins Gold Medals at F Class World Championships
45.0 gr of 2208 , with 168gr Berger VLDs jammed 0.010" gave me 2700 fps,and although that is quite slow it did a great job fire forming and was still plenty accurate enough in a new barrel that had been broken in carefully with approx 45 shots.
My first 284 barrel shot 180 gr VLDs very accurately in front of REL 17,but I found it to be horrifically temperature sensitive and stopped using it. An increase of 6 deg. C just 6 days apart gave me an extra 104 fps, so that was the end of that ! That was shot over two chronographs ......did I mention that I may have OCD.........so I am very confident of the figures.
Perhaps in Canberra where the temp never gets over 10 deg C you might be OK with REL 17 till just after sun up
With 180 gr VLDs jammed 0.010", 50.0 gr of REL 17 gave me approx 2780 fps, and 50.6-50.8 gave me 2830 that I was looking for.
51.5 gr on the warmer day took me into the pressure danger zone, but easily achieved 2940 fps. Accuracy was bloody awful though.
Then I had a small play with 168 gr VLDs and REL17
48 gr gave me 2700 fps
51 gr gave me 2834 fps
51.3 gr gave me 2863 fps
51.5 gr gave me 2878 fps.

Then I discovered 2209 , as Matt had already done about 20 years earlier
Try starting at 50.0 gr of 2209 with jammed 168 gr VLDs , or a grain less (49.0 gr) with 180 gr VLDs and work up carefully from there. Sell your REL 17 to someone in Tasmania

I think its because down south they're always cold and grumpy. We would be too! It stands to reason that the further North you go, the more hot wind your subject to........... as long as we're not cold and grumpy

P.S. Hot winds harder to shoot in too. ..................... oh yes I did go there

wow that's a big fps increase for 6deg? ! I don't have a 284 or use re17 as I've also heard it can be temp sensitive but never thought it would be that bad!

Do you think there could have been any other factor that attributed to the increase like a new barrel finally settling after several hundred rounds, carbon fouling or opening up the bore with some excessive KG and bronze brush. . . . . . You know how some people have done that type of thing?
