223 F STD loads.
Hi I am setting up a rifle for F Std it's an Omark in 223 with a 26" MAB 1in 7 twist barrel.
Was wondering if any one had any loads to suit this rifle that they would be willing to share with me.
Or anyone shooting 223 could tell me which components they were using eg: Projectile, Case, powder& Primer.
I know it's a case of what suits your rifle may not suit another rifle but would good to get an idea of what others are using.
Cheers Tod.

Re: 223 F STD loads.
Its been a while but I had a 223 7 twist savage 26" barrelled rifle and it was very very accurate, but my loads were 24.x gr 2208. That was fine at 300m.
The max loads listed in ADI are 24gr 06H or 25gr 2208. The people I have seen be successful at longer ranges with a 223 have used a bit more than these loads, ie 24.x of 06H or 25.x of 2208 and they have had 30 " barrels. And still, when the wind gets up, well you know ..... Primers were BR4s. 80gr pills of course, either sierras or bergers. I would try the 80.5 fullbores.

Re: 223 F STD loads.
Tod I wasn't aware of MAB making 7 twist barrels in 223 but they may have. Might pay to check the twist rate to make sure. If it is only 26 inch you will probably get best velocity out of 2206H. Primers that work are Remington 7 1/2's, CCI 450's or CCI br4's if you don't mind spending a bit more (I've found it hard to pick any difference in performance). Any of the projectiles work ok but the Amax and Berger will perform better past 700 yards than the rest. Lapua are the pick of the cases to use but Remington's are as durable but need a bit of prepping like de burring flash holes and the Noslers are good but expensive. The short barrel may limit you to 800 yards as velocity needs to be right up there with a 223 to get back further. Speeds above 3000 fps are needed to make the 80 grainers work at 1000 and I don't think that will be achievable with your 26 inch tube.

Re: 223 F STD loads.
Im running 25.5 grains of 2208 in lapua cases with 80 grain berger vlds with a 10 thou jam and cci br4s. Using an mab 28 inch barrel. This is fine in my rifle. Im going to try for more powder when i have time for load development. Thats safe in my rifle but doesnt mean it will be in anyone elses tho

Re: 223 F STD loads.
Starting to get set up. Got some AR2208, CCI BR4 primers, Berger 80.5 full bore projectiles and 100 norma cases.
Have prepped all the cases, Trimmed, uniformed primer pockets, flash hole de-burred and FLS.
weighed all the cases they ranged from 90.2gn-91.9. average of 91.255gn.
Just have to wait now to get a projectile seating depth and start reloading.

I have a T3 Supervarmint using a similar load with 08 using 80gn Amax pills and Lapua cases. Remington 7-1/2 primers mandatory! Especially with a standard throat. Shoots very tight groups, very nice for a factory off the shelf rifle.
Yet to chronograph that load but should be similar to yours. The best do-all rifle around!

Sounds like the Tikka is a lot of rifle for the money.
Good to see an off the shelf rifle shoot so well.
Cheers Tod

Re: 223 F STD loads.
Its stupidly accurate, its boring
You take the time in RnD, you'll reep the rewards. Tweek the load when needed, check "that" load every so often esp when weather changes ( ie: winter summer ) dont have to adjust much ( like .2 grn + or - ) to keep it shooting tighter then a fishes butt hole.
You gotta play your part too. Consistency is the key in all thongs shooting.
