F CLASS 'X' RING

Re: F CLASS 'X' RING
We now use white x rings for all disciplines at our range including for competitions and have had no complaints... I dont think there is an issue really, with 2/3 of the shooters using scopes.

Re: F CLASS 'X' RING
I see an issue with marking the target if the entire X ring is white.
The marker would need to keep changing from black to white stickers. At 300 he would have trouble maintaining any sort of definition to the X ring.
However I do prefer a white dot aiming mark when using a scope with a black reticle. With a black aiming mark some scopes have the option of an illuminated reticle in either Red or Green. This may be an option for those that find it difficult to see.

I had an issue in 2013/14 with seeing the black cross hairs on the black target when I had a cataract on my shooting eye. I spent out on a Nightforce benchrest with the illuminated reticle but the reticle just goes back to black at the distances we shoot so I achieved nothing accept to supply another shooter with a new heavily discounted scope .
I actually raised it as a topic on the forum as I was looking for a scope with the 'reticle with an actual colour' just in case that did not happen with them(go black at distance).
My experience is that illuminated reticles do not hold the colour over distance.
Since my operation last February I no longer have the need.

With our club electronic targets there is very little of the whole of the 6 ring left after 3 or 4 shooters and, none of the X ring, but the backing behind the target face is white corflute so what we have is a white centre, but, with no visible rings.

This white centre has never proved to be a problem with TR shooters and having to change centres would defeat the purpose of 'not having to drive back and forth and, some one in the butts', which is required for manuals.

Re: F CLASS 'X' RING
I have a number of Nightforce scopes. None of them "Go back to black" at any distance when the illuminated reticle is turned on so I don't know what the issue was with your scope?
The new Nightforce, ATACR-T is great. It has a finer crosshair and both Red and Green illuminated reticles can be selected with the push of a button.

Re: F CLASS 'X' RING
I notice that most of the "pro-all-white" people would normally be using electronic targets. Norm's point about spotter colour wouldn't concern them. I think those of us who use manual targets are probably more tolerant of poor quality aiming marks - we often have to contend with spotters spoiling the shape of the X-Ring and/or centre bull. I have suggested an offset aiming mark (say 1 or 2 minutes above the middle) to remedy this, but of course didn't get any support for the idea from ET users. Probably best to just leave it alone, on the basis that its the same for everyone. Regarding Ray's situation, there is no rule specifying you must use a standard reticule. If you are prepared to be a knob twiddler rather than aimer offer, then a custom reticle that uses the whole aiming mark to aim could theoretically be no less precise than the cross-hair type. It would come at a cost, but against the price of the scopes we use, not huge.

As TimL said on another topic-- introducing changes to suit local needs/requirements ( ? ) will only produce another " oddity " like FS-- so lets not do it, one oddity is enough.

Quite correct Barry,as I see it,some shooters are never happy, always after an advantage,or some easy way to get a score, somewhat like climbing Mt Everest with a permanent ladder to the top and a couple of strong Sherpas to drag you there.

Re: F CLASS 'X' RING
I thought this sport was about how could perform the best on any given day in any given condition. I dont see the point in making changes to the targets in order make thing easier on the range just to increase the scores, if you take a look at the scores that were produced at the ACT Queens last week i dont think that any one could argue that the current target was a problem. Leave them the way they are is my vote .

Re: F CLASS 'X' RING
The majority of ranges have already changed to white super centres .... it is up to other rifle ranges to keep up, or not as they choose. The rules allow for either design and as the majority now shoot scope rifle I think this discussion is really a no-brainer ...

The majority of ranges where?? This is a national forum.
Also what makes you say the rules allow for either design? The wording of the rules is a little loose, but the intention has always been to have white rings at the margins of all values within the black aiming mark as per ICFRA.

Re: F CLASS 'X' RING
Why not have a neutral colour like grey in the centre? It wouldn't bother the tr shooters and would have contrast between a black retical and the super.

Re: F CLASS 'X' RING
Just a suggestion but what about light blue. The 600 yard benchrest targets are light blue. I like using them a lot at any distance.

Re: F CLASS 'X' RING
With Australians starting to travel more and more internationally to shoot both in teams and as individuals, any departure from ICFRA standards for target dimension and design seems quite silly to me.
