I am new to shooting the .284, and compared to most of the guys on here, new to shooting in general. But I'll tell you what I have found so far...

I have been running both the Berger 180VLDs and 168VLDs with 2213SC. I was having vertical issues for a few weeks but I have since discovered I was a bit sloppy with my technique and wasn't placing enough downward pressure on the rear of my rifle. Since doing this over the past couple of weeks at 500 and 300 metres, the vertical has disappeared and groupings are tight. I am shooting F Open obviously, but my rifle setup is not ideal (Tikka T3 in a Roedale Precision chassis), shooting off a Star Shooter bipod - Not the worst equipment setup, but certainly could be better as far as stability and tracking are concerned. Rest of the rifle is sweet, with a Bix N'Andy trigger and a 1:8.8 twist 30" Brux barrel fitted by Matt P who did a great job. I am having a proper F open stock being made at present and will be able to really test my .284 in a Dolphin Co-axial rest in the new year.

Anyway, I have found the 168's to be great thus far. I shot my PB last weekend at Hornsby with them, shooting a 119.10. I was on track for my first ever double possible but got caught out by a late wind shift which put me into the 5 ring on my last shot on my second stage. Can't buy experience so they say...

I'm running 54 grains of 2213SC, velocity is 2705fps, I am not sure if it's a bit on the slow side, others may be able to offer more advice but it's accurate so I'm pretty happy. More experienced shooters may be able to chime in, I'm not sure whether I should try and push up above 55 grains for another accuracy node. Brass is certainly holding up well after 4 firings and I have been a little concerned about many shooters complaining of poor brass life with the .284. I haven't tried to reach max pressure and the limiting factor is my ability to read wind, which I am slowly working on. I may run a 54.2gr load this weekend as that is what I am running with the 180s. I certainly plan on buying more 168s though, my rifle likes them and so do I.

I have a Shehane, so holds a couple of grains more than the straight 284W. I recently gave an old Maddco barrel a run using 57.4gn of 2213SC, Fed 210GM primers, 168VLDs jammed about 0.015", velocity about 2840fps. It went very well at distances out to 900yd. 2213SC varies a bit between batches - this was MEM4989.

Thanks for the info Willow its very helpful. You sound like you certainly have "the bug" and will be a force to be reckoned with once your on a co-axial rest with dedicated F-class stock when they arrive.. 119.10 is fantastic shoot well done.

Alan, thanks for chiming in too. It seems to be that both ADI powders have a significant enough variance between batches to be aware. I think you prefer reloader and VV. Is that the reason? I want to stay with ADI because of ease of access logistically.

I shot my first .284W barrel on 180 VLD's and ar2213sc with good results but my second barrel hated it and loved ar2209.

I'll do a ladder with 168 VLD's and ar2213sc, starting at 53gn and working up to 56gn, maybe a touch more if pressure signs are O.K and see if it will move a node on the MV scale compared to an ar2209 ladder.

No probs at all Denis, hope it helps and I hope the load development is productive - I would be interested to hear what powder charge you settle on, it may prompt me to do a little more development myself if you find a node between 55-56 grains.

168gr VLD's was all I used until the 2013 WFC and 180gr were the required projectile mainly because all ranges are all long ranges

Node was around 2930fps (CED) with 2213SC I have gone back to using my old sleeved Rem with it's original barrel re-chambered 3X still good enough to win a local OPM here and there.
with over 4k down the tube accuracy is still very competitive BTW still using the original 180pcs of Lap brass

Just go use em
accuracy over BC will always win

originally 55.5Gr 2213SC out of 30" 8.5 Krieger
now I use 58-59grs but the barrel is only about 26 inches
I usually bump the load up .2 -.3gr each time it has been rechambered
although I have noticed that 2213SC powder lot have been all over the place the last 12 months
so you will have to do you own tests the barrel will tell you what velocity it likes
and I have no idea what the current velocities are out of this barrel at present
it just continues to shoot well.
