Hi all new to this group
I'm planing to build a 7mm saum using 168gn VLDs with ar2213sc or ar2217
On a CZ or Winchester 300-338 win-mag action (if I can find one)
My question is can I use a STD length throat reamer or does the throat need to be longer ? so I can play around with seating depths
Barrel length ? 26 or 28in
Thanks for any info you can share

Re: Action for 7mm saum
Yeah mate both
I think the question i should be asking is what lenght action shonld i be using when using 168gn VLDs seating them out to run .010 to .020 of the rifling ? Because I'll be very limited to magazine space ?

Re: Action for 7mm saum
Generally I wouldn't recommend trying to build a rifle that compromises between hunting and F-Class, because the requirements are quite different. For example the optimum weight for a SAUM in F-Class is 10Kg (the maximum allowed), whereas for hunting less than half of that and a muzzle brake (not allowed in F-Class). As far as seating depth goes, for F-Class you also need to think of the other available target projectiles, some of which are much longer than the Berger 168, and so throat length and twist rate need to be decided accordingly. In F-Class we don't have magazines generally, although they are allowed as long as rounds are fed in and shot singly. And many of us have cartridge OAL so long that a loaded round will not eject normally - it needs to be withdrawn with the bolt out of the rear of the action. So most on this forum would have never have considered SAUMs with a magazine - can I suggest you'd get a better response on the Long Range Hunting forum?

Re: Action for 7mm saum
I'm still a little confused about what your asking but im not aware of anyone using a saum that is fed through a mag for f class. It is also rare for f classers to be running the 168s in a saum. It might be hard to get the right answers but what you need to find out is the max overall length you can load for the Cz and win mags. do you have a reamer or will be getting one? Use the specs to calculate how they will fit together. If I have understood you correctly you are looking at either a short action CZ or a long action Winchester? The long action would be the safe way to go as should have a longer mag. Remember you will need a magnum bolt face!

Re: Action for 7mm saum
Hi , just my 2 c worth. If you are going for a dual purpose rifle . .308 cal is a much better choice and compete in b grade standard . You will be able to keep your 155 Gr loads and 168 Gr Amax or z max loads at mag length . Perfect rifle for this is a savage hspfcp in .308 . Bed the action , put a vortex viper
( in milrads of coarse ) . And you'll have a rifle that will be very competitive in b grade standard and light enough with a short barrel to be able to hunt with. I'm sorry I sold mine ! But had to , to fund another rifle build.
Going with a Saum as Allan said in a hunting weight 5-6kg without a break is going to be torture to shoot. Also you will be in open against some of the most accurate rifles arguably in the world. It will be tough enough in b grade standard . But at least you will be on a level playing field in terms of cal and loads . Also a good class to learn how to wind read too!
Regards Graham.
Ps I built up a rem for dual purpose if you want read in photos of guns section under rem 700. You can learn from some of my mistakes and maybe save time and some money

Re: Action for 7mm saum
I have a SAUM built on a savage 12 target repeater action with a magnum boltface, that has won once and placed a few times in F open OPMs , but lately its been in need of a rebarrel so i just use it at club comps when i have the projectiles ....
I use a single shot slide (from sharp shooter supply) in place of the magazine. But I bought a magazine for it and you can use it with some loads but the krieger match barrel has been chambered with the same reamer as many others here and some target loads are too long for the magazine, of course, especially now the throat has worn, but thats not a problem at the range. The barrel is too heavy for a hunting rifle and 29" long. The stock has 1kg of lead in it. You could remove the lead for hunting but you would still be stuck with a heavy barrel tapering to 0.9in at the muzzle.
So no, I think even though you could have 2 stocks and 2 loads for a target/hunt set up, you would still be stuck with a barrel thats too heavy for hunting, if you wanted to be competitive at the range in what is a very demanding discipline in terms of hardware and accuracy standards. BUT to answer your question, if you want to try to do both, you would probably need a long action and a magazine that may need custom fitting if you actually want to use it with target loads. Some are definitely too long for the short action, as a repeater. If you want specific COAL info for VLDs feel free to message me.
