I wouldn't consider a 50 cal, not accurate enough for me. If I had somewhere closer to shoot longrange, it would be a 375 Cheytac for me or a big cased 338.

This is what one needs to win king of 2 mile at the moment!!
Unfortunately us Aussies being world Champs at this is very much a long shot , pardon the pun !
We simply don’t have the rifle ranges to support it and maybe majority have enough monitory problems trying to keep up in F open or ftr etc , to try and have a crack at it .

Not to mention a recalcitrant Weapons Lic Branch that don’t see the need to own a snipy tac cal!
I’m not giving up by any means , but Aussie are way behind the 8 ball in this dissapline !
Back to the thread . 338 is not bad as you can get a decent supply of projectiles.

Alan, I think you have missed the point...

Sorry about that. I saw the 8mm max in your first post and went off half-cocked. If its open slather on calibre then 50 cals seem to be the best performers for accuracy at ultra-long range, but very expensive to run.

I did ask the question re,1. up to 8mm and 2. over 8mm as a fishing expedition trying to gain peoples thoughts as to what the most accurate rifle cartridge would be , out to the one mile mark as there is a good chance there will be an Australian event this year. So i spouse i should have asked can a winning cartridge come from the current crop of Fclass or long range Fclass rifles or will i need to look at some of the more traditional long range rifle cartridges?

Where do you think a mile event may be held in Australia?
The couple of events I have seen this year don't fit either they have no energy limit but limited to 1000 yards
Or they have distance but an energy limit which kicks out any competitive one mile cartridge.
My 300 Norma should be very competitive but produces just under 5K Ft lbs ME.

Also a one mile event should focus on similar round count to the 2 mile event?
The long range event this year with 15 and 20 rounds punishes both shooter and barrel!

I don't even want to compete in 10 shot matches with the 300 Norma.

Maybe along the lines of the new guidelines coming from ELR of 3 shots per distance/ plate with no sighters?

In my opinion the best calibre for such long range shooting would be the .338 Snipetac with 300gn Bergers. They perform better than my .375 Cheytac which is an awesome calibre too with the right bullets.
