Out of interest did you make any changes after S1 or was that all mirage?
I was attempting to shoot on a condition, also trying to alter in to the centre where it looked to be same condition to previous shot. The shift was subtle, but always changing, the killer on Saturday was the change had already occurred before it could be seen i the mirage, the flags were showing stuff all wind. Our range has low mounds and can be badly affected by mirage.
The sigh picture was significantly better later in the day, wind strengthened but steadied from about 10oc
Still shot poor elevation which in my case makes me suspect the barrel is in need of a freshen up, something I could not tell when the mirage was thick.
You know, the same pattern can be caused by different factors. The elevations in my 600m group could have been caused by velocity changes. I only know they were not because i have chronographed the rifle and there is hardly any spread at all. And I have seen the 5/6/700m groups on a good day...And I was there and know it was december and the mirage was boiling and the sun was in and out of cloud..... So for my rifle its mirage. Also very important to push the rifle forward on the rest between shots., but thats another issue.
Once you know how your rifle shoots you can know when to blame the conditions and when to blame your load. Your 300m group is fine but you need to do that at 5-600 m to confirm the load is ok, on a calm day, then when things go wrong you will know its the wind & mirage not the rifle tune. 300m is a bit close to be sure, as velocity variations do not show up as bad groups necessarily....
UL1700 wrote:I know that I struggle with mirage so it could be, but I would have expected to drop a few supers and maybe a 6 not that horror show! I keep toying with the idea of a Dasher or BRX but from what I have read it looks hard to justify the time and cost of fire forming. I still have some capacity left so i could increase my current load further but its siting nicely at the moment.
Trigger time before chasing technical "fixes" !!!!! Fine tuning may be required...........but I would concentrate on technique & learning wind doping FIRST!!!!!!!! Keith H.
UL1700 wrote:Thanks Ben its good to see I'm not the only one Having talked it through and knowing I'm not going mad / having kit issues is good. Dropping the final shot two weeks in a row was possibly more frustrating then the second range as I think I know why it happened. Mirage was the most significant change between the 1st and 2nd range. I think one mistake I keep making is to have to much magnification on when the mirage is bad. I can't see the center of the target, it's floating around by 1 to 2+ minuets and I start chasing the center rather then backing off the scope and accepting the smaller target...
Experience brought about by trigger time with the empathises on TIME!! I have been shooting competitively for over 45 years & still get caught out as do ALL shooters from time to time!! If it were as easy as you seem to expect it to be we would have all given it up years ago & looked for something more challenging!!!! Spend the time, enjoy the learning curve & reap the rewards that will come in time!! Keith H.
Hello UL1700. If you are concerned that the rifle might not be performing, then ask a fellow shooter with demonstrated skill if they would mind shooting it for you.
If they aren't readily available, then I'm happy to oblige.
Hi Mike I'm always happy for others to shoot my kit when they are willing, I know there are a couple of new 6BR setups at Lang Lang after people have tried mine but I have not managed / asked one the "best" to put a range down in a while and not with the 6br. I may well take you up on that offer soon but will now probably be after the Shoot for Autism.
