It wont make any difference other than changing the height of the scope as the angle is between the top and bottom face of the rail.

If it were me I would 1st set the action level, then fit the rail and measure the angle, then add the bottom half of the scope rings, place a suitable sized piece of bar stock in the scope bases and measure again to find where the inaccuracy is coming from.

Yep.

Funny that you should say that. On Friday night I deccided to send it in to the gunsmith to sort out while he fits a new barrel.

When the gunsmith tells me what the issue is, I will post it here.

Thank you everyone for your replies and assistance.

Hi Johno

I also thought so but a straight edge proved me wrong.

I finally managed to find time to drop it off with the gunsmith today. We shall see...

Hey mate you need to push your rail forward,so it is flush with rear of action also check that you have got clearance, from front of scope bell too the barrel Marty

Hi EWM

Nope, just a badly angled photo. The objective bell is well clear of the rail. I am not sure how the rings being too close together can affect my useable elevation so badly though, especially in conjunction with a 20moa rail?

I have not heard from the gunsmith as yet, but he did say to only start calling after 2 weeks which is next week Tuesday.

just looking at your pictures and noticed that your front scope rings are mounted directly over the area where your rail should be screwed down to your action. By any chance have you checked that the screw heads are flush with the bottom of the machined surface where the scope ring locator sits, or is it proud and the ring is sitting proud on the rail? Also looking at the rear of the rail on the action, dose not look to be mounted on the true top of the action. Photo of scope mounted on rail is there clearance between the front bell of the scope and the rail. This rail needs to be shortened to suit the scope and the action, and your ring placement needs to be further apart. Just a couple of things that may have been missed or need attention. Another thought is your barrel true and straight in the action or its self, it dose not take much of a deviation from straight to stuff every thing up.

Ok the rifle is back with a 30moa rail on top.

As per the gunsmith there was nothing wrong with the original set up,just that 40moa elevation with a 20moa rail is not enough to reach 800m in a .308 running 155gr HBCs.

At least I can get on with shooting again & working out a load for the new barrel.

I don't think that's right. Your bullets must be traveling very slow if you can't get to 800 metres with a BR and 20MOA rail. If I'm reading what you've said right that means you have 70moa total now?
