30 cal sub projectile

Post by Julian D »

Has anyone got any suggestions for a good subsonic pill for 30 cal ? Been using the Hornady Sub X 190gn & love them but cannot get anymore of them locally, Have some factory Rem. 220gn sub ammo but they don't seem to open up like the Hornady's. It is for a short range hunting rifle, a 2" group at 50mtr offhand is all I am chasing, so nothing spectacular, just want something that creates a decent wound cavity.

Have you tried meplat trimming a hollow point to make it larger. The larger hole should help it open.

Not yet, probably because I don't own a meplat trimmer.
They seem so popular in the states, but we don't seem to have any of them here ( subsonic projectiles ), I may just go through Reloading Int. and bring some in.

for subsonic, why not use a cast bullet.
it could be quite a soft alloy and also have a hollow point,
a flat nosed bullet of about 20:1 lead tin will kill game and expand.
the easiest for a beginner is a grease groove bullet, but paper patched will also work well.
you might be surprised how accurate they are when done right.

The hornady ones are 190gr , i tried a 190gr berger vld at 1100 fps in the twist calculator and its just ok, so i imagine the subsonics are a little blunter and should be ok. Thats 10 twist. I saw some 240gr lead pills for sale but i think you would need an 8 twist for them at 1100fps, which is pretty specialised.
