2208 OR 2209?

Post by MrMackie »

I would like to know from peoples experience what powder, either ADI2208 OR ADI2209 would be better suited for a .308 rifle, being used on a range with the following atributes:

26" Barrel
150gn and 155gn Projectiles

I have used 2208 when loading .308 before, but would like to standardize (If Possible) my powder to 2209 as i use this in a different calibre.

Personal experience and recomendations would be much appreciated.

Thanks

MrM,
2209 is too slow ( burning ) for 155 gn 308 particularly in a 26" barrel.
2208 is better but u would need to use Winchester cases to get enough powder ( better than 46gns ) to obtain sufficient speed for 1000 yds.
Better still would be 2206H in a Lapua case ( probably 44.5 gns )
Still pushing the upper limits with your 26" barrel though.

Thanks Barry for your reply. I was hoping the 09 would be ok, but now i can see why it wouldnt due to the slow burn rate.

I wouldnt be shooting out to anything more than 600 with my .308

Thanks again,
M

Mr M
A little info I reload my sons 308 with 43.5 gns 2206H he uses it back to 800m with 155 gn SMK's. In a 24 inch barrel it's easy on the shoulder & accurate, he shoots F/Standard with scores in the mid 50's at 800m, it's even better at 600m, hope this helps.

Thanks Peter T. Looks like from your and other people experience that 2206 would be best suited for my barrel length, projectile and intended ranges.

Cheers!

I 2nd the 2206H as well. It gets about the same velocity as 2208 but more consistent speeds, cleaner as well.
I have tried to load as much 2209 as I could into a case, but the velocity is too low. No go with 2209
