Berger 80.5gn projectiles

Post by fclass556 »

Anyone had anything to do with the Berger 80.5gn BT projectiles. Heard good things about them from the States. Im looking to try some and curious if anyone else has dabbled yet. :?:

I used the 80.5 gr Bergers at just one Club shoot, of approx 25 rounds, in my tight chambered, brand new .223 after a careful break-in of approx 20 shots in a Krieger 1 in 7.75 twist barrel.
Initial shots during break in, using freshly neck turned brass, were very tight at 100 yds, but at my single Club Day, I had 3 or 4 fairly wild flyers out of my 21 "for record", at 500 yards, and ended up going home with my tail between my legs.
Obviously at this early stage I can't really blame the Bergers, as I have a heap of work in front of me to develop a load and fine tune it around a node or two, but the flyers ......all scoring 4's, were certainly way out of character based on the other shots that day......6's and 4's !
I will put some time and effort into trying to get it to shoot, after the QRA Queens in August and perhaps we can compare notes on the Bergers.
For the next month I had better concentrate on my BAT 6x47 Lapua in it's new F Class stock, and on a 6.5 x 47 Lapua built on an old Omark, that Wild Dog have just re-stocked and pillar bedded for me. I am waiting on a Davies trigger for it, Coz I am stuffed if I can use the horrific Omark one that it came with.
My 8 Oz Jewell on the BAT has really spoilt me for the past year, I think.

Have you settled on a powder yet ? My first efforts were using 2206H and 0.001 off the lands
Extreme accuracy and precision shooting at long range can be a very addictive pastime.

havent fired one yet but have a few boxes that I want to try. In the past Ive run 25.2 to 25.4 of 2208 with the proj's seated 10.000 into the lands. 556 dont like jump especially the secant ogive VLD like the AMax's, Bergers and JLK's. I did run Sierras some time ago until they priced themselves out and had good success using the same theory. I dont neck turn (Lapua Cases) but I do trim. BR4 primers are what seems to work also. Maddco 1/8 twist at 26" long gives me around 2900 fps. Im in the process of building up 2 Stolle Panda FClass actions (the wife loves me coz she shoots too !!) and trying all variables especially with the Bergers being approved as of next year. Cheers matey.
