Actions glued into stocks

G'day all,

I've found a rifle I'm interested in as my first FO rifle, the action is glued into the stock and I want this to be a switch barrel. Would this be possible still?

It could work. The crux of the issue is to use a vice that is capable of grabbing the barrel firmly forward of the stock. My Redback I bought through BRT suits, but there are more on the market. Otherwise, it's business as usual.

Yes.
Apply heat (sitting an iron on top of the action for a few minutes will usually suffice) remove action and barrel from stock when glue softens. Clean off old glue. Easy

Gents,

Cheers for your advice. I chatted to the owner and he said its set up to be a switch barrel rig. I was under he impression that you remove action from stock to swap barrels, now I know that you just unscrew barrel out and put new one in.

i don't have a glue in action BUT i never take the action out of the stock to change barrels. i just clamp the barrel vice just in front of the forend and use a side port action wrench.

someone correct me if im wrong but I've also herd that you can put the action/stock in a frezer to pop the glue?!!

I change barrels way too much some say, but never take the action out of the stock, don't take the scope off or anything. I clamp the barrel forward or the stock and twist the action slightly to loosen it. Only takes 2 minutes to change barrels, nice and easy.

i have a glue in, and changing barrels is not an issue.
the forend channel is a handy guide as you get started.

My BAT is a switch barrel, and the action is glued in by my gunsmith Phil Jones (Redback) who is a benchrest "Hall of Fame'r"
Apparently most/many benchresters choose to glue them in.
Phil tells me that the glue job will only last approx 2 years, and will then need re-doing.
One bit of bad news with "glue ins" is that apparently lots of glue jobs fail immediately after a two hour plus plane trip, in the hold. You get to the other end for a big shoot, and get the shock of your life when you go to lift beloved rifle out of its case. Stuart Elliott thinks its the rapid change of temperature when landing, but knows of many benchresters who have had the experience. Most now carry a simple emergency repair kit of 5 Minute Araldite these days, just in case.
I am dreading my rifles first plane ride to Tasmania next year !

That's a good point. I've read about that too. Is your action glued and screwed or just glued? My one is screwed aswell I'm pretty sure.

Ill hopefully be going to tassie aswell if WARA decides to send a team.

No mine is glued only. Jonesey would have forgotten more about accuracy yesterday morning before smoko, than I will ever know, so I am happy to leave all the technical stuff to him while i concentrate on trying to learn to shoot better, and to read the wind better.
I will definitely be looking for a new glue job shortly ! Mine will be two years old in August.

Ill have to ask the former owner when the glue job was last done but I'm considering when it needs reglueing just getting it pillar and glass bedded so I can swap stocks if needed.
