QRA Queens 2014 Equipment List

Post by ecomeat »

Thanks to Tim Nugent for helping to collect the data.
The spreadsheets for F Open and FTR have been sent to Alan Fraser, who will do whatever he has to do to and the get them online asap.
Keep an eye out for Alan's addition to this thread !
As a teaser, out of 37 starters in F Open, there were :
11 x SEB Rests
10 x Farley Rests
6 x Caldwell rests

And in FTR everybody shot a .308

I make it
15 x 284 Win
5 x 284 Shehane
4 x 6mm Dashers
4 x 6.5 x 284
2 x 6.5 X 47 Lap
2 x 6 BR
5 x "others"....7 SAUM, 300 WSM, 280 Hills, 22-250AI, 260AI
No big surprises there with 22/37 (approx 60%) being 7mm.
7 x six mm is a big vote for light recoiling rifles......thats only just under twenty percent.......and exactly the same number as the 6.5mm calibres.
Just the one 30 cal., now that PJ has decided to immigrate to Qld permanently and has embraced the 7mm as per State protocol !

9 out of the Top Ten finishers in the Queens were 7mm for the "longs"

Great job on the Equipment list guys.

But to be accurate, I only used the SAUM for the 1000 yards on the last day, as I had run out of ammo for the 6.5x47L.

With the 3.5 MOA maximum in the wind over the entire week, it didn't cause me to jump to the SAUM.

I think we should introduce a new rule in F Open, where we limit the caliber based on conditions on the day

You could find on the really easy day's that we all get out with small bore 22's and shoot off at 1000 yards

I've always thought a handicap would be better. If you win, your gear is given to a backyard gun plumber to fiddle with, the time he has it being dependent on how hard you kicked arse. #-o

Mike,
Yes sorry mate. That was an "Editorial" decision of mine to just record the 1000 yard weapon of choice.
A number of other shooters also used more than one calibre, throughout the event, but I was too grumpy to chase every last detail  it just takes too much time, and I was only there at the Queens for Day one, and the very wet Day three.
Collecting the data can take a bit more application to the job than you might think it would, and while it didn't affect me who wasn't shooting, at all, I would hazard a guess that Tim Nugent wasn't able to apply his normal attention to his shooting performance.
In my perfect world, we would have a standard form as part of all F Open Queens Entry, where shooters are required to fill in an Equipment List form before being allowed to shoot.......and Ozfclass Rankings Points would not be awarded if the Equipment form wasn't completed.
I understand that most Benchrest competitions do that, and it's not an issue. The 1000 yard BR Club at Belmont requires it every monthly shoot, and the participants just accept it.
I think it's really important for anybody who cares to be able to see a Queens Equipment List, but particularly for those less experienced competitors (like me) and the beginners who are just starting, or considering starting to shoot F Class.
Being able to easily look up a List and see what the top performers were/are using can be a big benefit to someone who really wants to know what experienced and successful shooters are using.

So how about everyone who used a different calibre, besides the one listed on the Equipment List make a simple post / reply on this thread and list the details of your "extra" rifles ?

Ah John, there are so many ways to handicap people

Maybe we could set the 6mm as the benchmark for each range, and take off 1 point for using a 6.5 and 2 points for using a 7mm, and 5 points for using a 30 WSM.

Mark F pointed out how he kept up with the top F Open boys (well done), however he was using heavy 30 cal projectiles, which with my handicap scheme above, would put him well down on the F Open field :P

That was an "Editorial" decision of mine to just record the 1000 yard weapon of choice.

Still a worthwhile job undertaken, as I too used to look at the list to determine what was at the pointy end of the competition. The good thing about the list, is that it gives you the ability to work out who to talk to when looking for advice about specific equipment.

Interesting list of equipment, and it just goes to show that there are a lot of joy stick rests out there. I like the new SEB joystick that the FTR crew get to use. Very well designed, and shiny too 8) It has that BLING factor that should appeal to the SA boys.

Grumpy? From where I stood, you couldn't get the grin off your face, even if the powder you were sniffing again was secondhand.
