Does anyone use AR2217 in a .284 Win?
G'day All,
I've broken in and started load testing a new .284 Win barrel, 180 VLD's and AR2213sc. It looks like I have the option of running very accurately though slowly at approx. 52.8gn which leaves a lot of air in the case, or using the next node up which looks to be around the 55gn mark. From my experience with my last barrel, 55gn was hard on primer pockets.
It's left me wondering what AR2217 might be like in a .284 Win with 180 VLD's. I'd imagine it would have good load density and less chamber pressure..??
Is AR2217 capable of producing low SD.??
Would I get enough AR2217 into Lapua brass to achieve 2800 fps.??
Thanks....

Re: Does anyone use AR2217 in a .284 Win?
Denis,
I use 55.7 gr 2213sc in a 29 5/8" Maddco barrel for 2825 fps, jumping Hybrids 0.015"
I use 57.1 gr 2213sc in a 30 7/8" Bartlein barrel for same speed, jumping Hybrids 0.080"
NB !! NB!! I am using Lot #MEM5195 which requires a full 1.0 gr MORE powder to hold the same velocity as the previous Lot that I had, which was MEM5096 ......so my MEM 5195 is definitely a slow one.
According to Quickload, 108% is actually a full case, (don't ask me how that works !) and just playing around, using my own case measurements (eg 67.66gr of water capacity, 2.155" case length and 3.285" COAL) it says that 60.5gr of 2217 would be 107% capacity and a powder burn ratio of 99.87%, for 2895 fps.
It seems that you would get your desired 2800 fps fairly comfortably.
Let us know if its safe in your rifle, so that I can open the two tubs of 2217 that I bought for my 280AI, but didn't use

Extreme accuracy and precision shooting at long range can be a very addictive pastime.

I was thinking about 65gr of 2217 would be a good load in my 7mm saum, i will let you know when i test it

id quod est

That would be hot,..... be careful,... primer pockets won't last long.
At 65gns of 2217 you would get around 3100fps after initial run in depending on barrel length twist etc.

Re: Does anyone use AR2217 in a .284 Win?
I have tried 2217 in some 284 shehanes and it is too slow. Even with a full or compressed case, I could not get the same speed as 2209 or 2213sc. In one barrel I could sort of get the same speed, but ES was not as good. I had hoped it would help my latest 1000yd BR barrel get up to speed as it is particularly tight and builds pressure badly, but 2217 gave less speed than other powders)
From now on I wont even bother trying it in any more 284s as there are other better powders.

Andrew, I reiterate Geoff's comments that 65 grains would be too much in the 7mm SAUM if you are pushing the 175gn or 180gn projies. Your brass will not thank you and the primer pockets will loosen up

Re: Does anyone use AR2217 in a .284 Win?
Thanks for the info Tony. I can see why in another thread in the distant past you had questioned my previous barrel loads. I was running 53.4gn ar2213sc with 180 VLD's and at the demise of the barrels accurate life, it was running at 2820fps.
Rod, thanks for sharing your experience. I'll stay away from AR2217 in the .284 win, especially if it didn't Gel with the slightly higher volume Shehane.
I've decided I'll commit to the faster ar2213sc node and replace brass more frequently if required.
When in Rome, do as the Romans do....

2209 is my go to powder now for the 284 Shehane, though I do try 2213sc in every new barrel I get.
The only powders I will try from now on are 2209, 2213sc and Vihta Vouri N165 (if I can get it).

Could AR2225 be used in a 7 saum? I was under the impression that "generally" you would select a slower burning powder for the long barrels.
Is there anything that would make this a bad choice? having only shot f standard it not really something I have had to put too much thought into.
thanks
Josh

Re: Does anyone use AR2217 in a .284 Win?
Josh, I have heard of one person using AR2225 in their SAUM, running 175 Sierra's.
However, from those that I talk to, most are either running 2209 or 2217. When using 2217 with 62grains in the case, it is quite full so that is probably why I haven't heard of others using AR2225.
Rod, it may have something to do with the location, however most Queenslander's and it looks like NSW shooters seem to like using 2209 in the bigger cases.

I think Norm was using it when he won the LR Nationals.

57gn AR2217, CCI 200 primer, 180gn Hybrid seated into lands.
Gave 5 shots into less than 1/2" at 300 yards.
Barrel didn't last much past 1000 rounds though.
