AR2217 in SAUM
Has anyone tried 2217 in their 7 SAUM behind 180gr VLDs ? I was thinking around 62gr and up but would like to hear from someone who has done it ....
I suppose 2225 is too slow ....
thanks

Re: AR2217 in SAUM
Hey macguru,
I have tried 2225 and it produced slow velocity even when it was a full case, from memory top speed was about 2850. It also carbon fouled heavily. Groups and sd for me were average so I moved on to try other powders.

Re: AR2217 in SAUM
yep it works well. you'll be somewhere around the mark at 62 and depending on your barrel and action probably top out around 64.5 ish being practical max. (usable but warm)
looking at the books you would think that 2213 should be ideal for the 7saum but seems most people go for 2209 or 2217. . . . . maybe there are a few out there running 2213? In the beginning I tried it and didn't get much love so stayed away from it since.

Re: AR2217 in SAUM
I will try but its not going to be very scientific,.... 59gr 2213SC produced almost identical group & velocity to 55.5gr 2209 , my base load. both are close to nodes
I dont think there is a huge change in behaviour there...
But I am still getting 1/3moa of elevation so I am going to try 2217 as i am looking for a flatter group so i think its worth a try filling up the case a bit more, i will try 62, 63 maybe 64 gr 2217.
I am using br2 primers. , not magnum ones as i found in a previous calibre that mag primers gave a bigger spread of velocities.

Hi mate , just don't want u to give up on mag primers . Below is when I was load developing my 338 Edge and was using Fed mag gold medal with ar 2225. Kind regards Graham.

Re: AR2217 in SAUM
Thats fantastic plumbs, maybe ill give it another try, also i have some cci 250s here, but for now i have loaded with br2s some saumz with 62,63,64 and 2 at 65gr 2217 (ADI table says 65.5 max and my existing 2209 load is 1gr over max) and i will try these first.... The saum case is alot smaller than yours and 2225 in theory at least would be too slow...
you have enough space out there to shoot your edge ?

Hi Mate , yes have a few 20000 acre farms around . Lot of fun shooting Steele ! 1.7 km is maximum range for my rifle and have a lot respect for the military using this cartridge !
Or should I say it cousin , Lap Mag! Regards Graham.

I would love to shoot open with it at Belmont, 1000 yds , muzzle brake and all?? Dream on !!
Re: AR2217 in SAUM
I found someone who is happy with 2225 in a saum :
I read about the matrix 190gr 7mm vld here ...

Re: AR2217 in SAUM
"Some have been made and are being tested. Quantities have not been shipped for distribution yet. We're close, within weeks.
Measured Performance:
G1 BC = 0.755 (Average from 3000 to 1500 fps)
G7 BC = 0.387 (Valid for all speeds)"
Found this recent post by Bryan Litz on accurateshooter regarding the new Berger 195gr .284 projectiles. .755 G1? Sheesh. Will be interesting to see how these heavy 7mm's go in the long run. Litz said the 195's would be on sale soon so we might get some here by 3rd quarter 2017

Re: AR2217 in SAUM
re the bergers - yeah maybe, ill believe it if they show up here at an affordable price
In the meantime i might try importing some of the 190 matrix pills .....
The 2217 experiment was a flop, the 180 bergers went like the clappers (felt like well over 3000, lots of smoke and recoil) but did not group for me at any of my 4 loads. The most promising this week was 59gr 2213sc, it shot right in the same group as my reference load (55.5gr 2209 2950fps) and i am hoping i can get a flatter group than 2209 as the case is more completely filled. We will see.

Re: AR2217 in SAUM
2217 works in 4 barrels I've used so far with no issues. yes loaded over around 62.5gr you'll be above 3000fps and you will notice the recoil and that's why I think many belive the saum won't shoot well running hot. more velocity = more recoil and makes it harder to shoot well. running near the top end of 2217 your probably going to be getting close to 3100 depending on barrel and chamber where's other powders you may be at least 100-150fps slower.
Some clever blokes in aus swear by 2209 in the saum and it must work for them as they shoot well! I've tested and shot a bit of 2209 but in the barrels I've had so far for me I keep going back to 2217 as I'm getting good accuracy, good ES and it's easy on brass.

Re: AR2217 in SAUM
Yes that sounds about right. 2213 is easier on the brass than 2209, and 2217 even more so . You could feel it on extraction. Considering how hard it is to get saum brass thats a factor in my move away from 2209. I was trying to keep a better grip on my rifle with the faster loads (2217) but it could have been me, in any case i will try to fine tune the 2213SC first before i go back to the 2217.
