Berger Hunting VLD for targets

Post by Norm »

Anyone had any accuracy or reliability issues with using the Berger VLD hunting projectiles for F-Class shooting?
Thanks Norm.

I am watching with interest here as I have had very different results with the Target Vlds compared to Hunting Vlds with the same other identical loads. Might just be my barrel but the 7 mm 180 gr Target variety shoot very well and the hunting version don't by a long way. Barrel is a four groove 9 twist Lilja in 7-08ai with 1300 rounds fired. Very interested to hear what results others have had with Berger 180gr Hunting Vlds in 284's etc. Especially as the Target Vlds are now so hard to find.

I think the story goes like this
The original VLD's are now branded hunting
There had been some issues with ppl using 6.5X284 with pills not making it to target
Because Berger's were using a thin copper J4 jacket
They then produced the Target version with thicker jacket and re box the originals in the orange box and labelled them hunting
There should be no issues with hunting type except if you are driving them a mag speeds
I would check their consistency until you are confident the quality is still there.

I'll be using 7mm 168 Hunting VLDs at Malabar over the next few days. My experience so far is that they're fine. Steve, it might be just a change in the shape of the ogive that is your problem - this can happen between different lots of Target Bergers also. Have you adjusted the seating depth to give the same jam/jump as with the Target bullet load that works well?

Alan I measured both for a 10 thou jump over at least six samples which is what has worked well. Both batches then measured within a couple of thou from the cartridge base to ogiive when measured with a comparitor. I am going to check all measurements again today.
Good luck in Sydney.

Hey Norm,
I have had success with the 180 VLD hunting in a 284, managed a 2nd at Canberra a while back.
If they were the only ones available I would be just as confident with them as the target variety.
As already stated you will just have to check seating depth.
Recently my 284 wasn't shooting as well as I wanted and after checking my seating depth, what I thought was 10 thou jamb measured with a stoney point case, was actually closer to 40 thou jamb when measured off the back of the barrel
