Reloading Advice - New ADI 2208 lot

Post by Gerard »

Hi Guys,
Im new to reloading and have worked up a load for my Angel 308 of 46.1gn of 2208.
I had previously been using a load of 45.5 but a check with a crono showed an ave of 2850fps and SD of 9.6.
So I was encouraged to look for a a little more velocity for the longer ranges.

I didn't have access to a crono since, and so to arrive at my current 46.1 I just worked up from 45.5 in .1 increments and using 5 shot groups at 100m and 300m.

Thing is, my current batch of powder is finished and I have just bought a new lot of 2208.

So my question is: Do I need to go right back and load test incrementally to again find the best group, or is it common practice to only load single rounds starting at 5% lower than (in my case) 46.1 to check incrementally for pressure signs and if alls well return to 46.1.
i.e. unless there is a factory error, batches of 2208 should be the same..??? (thats a big assumption, and why I'm asking here before starting my loading for Queens).

Clearly I'm very new to this so some advice on the best way forward would be appreciated.

cheers,
Gerard,
DenisA

When I start a new batch number of powder I'll normally test from .3gn below to .3gn above my previous load in .1gn increments. I normally look for group size and shape. MV is so helpful to know. That way if you haven't found your previous speed and group size you'll have a fair idea of where it is based on the results of your 7, 5 shot groups. If you don't have a chrono, the groups still tell the story.

I like to start shooting the test from the middle and work out 1 step either side. That way if the loads in the same spot or close to, I don't have to waste un-necessary rounds.

I'll add that I don't run any of my cartridges close to max pressure so I don't worry about starting lower for pressure reasons.
