New barrel purchase
Hi Everyone
Looking to purchase a new barrel soon and was hoping to get some feed back on some brands.
I am thinking of going 6mm Br on either a Omark or tikka action I have.
I am leaning towards the Omark as its single shot and has a rem 2 ounce trigger , alloy bedding ect.
Bartin and kreiger keep coming up as safe choices but both have a pretty hefty price tag.
I am wondering if any of you would feel comfortable using brands like , tru flight, tse, Swan?
I am not willing to risk giving up accuracy for a $100 saving .
But if the brands I mentioned are up to the task and just not a popular I would rather put the money saved to brass, pills , better dies ect.
Also have any of you had rifle barrels fitted by Jeff borg?
If so were you happy with the workmanship and end results?
Thanks

Re: New barrel purchase
I have 4 true flites in 308 and 7mm and very happy with them.
I also have just run in a 7mm brux but not sure how this one goes yet.
My true flit has won my many OPMs so I am really harpy with them.
Good luck getting a hummer for a good price.
I hope you get what you are looking for

I'm guessing your truflights still cost $600 landed?
Did you need b709s to get the barrels?

Re: New barrel purchase
Had a Trueflite which drove me nuts and pulled it at seven hundred rounds.
Apparently they had some issues a while back and did offer a replacement. Ended up with a Bartlien and never looked back. They have now lifted their game now supposedly.

Re: New barrel purchase
In my opinion the barrel is so important, so if there is somewhere to spend a little more then this is the place. I have not had a Krieger before so can't comment on them but i have had several other brands and I can say that the barts I have got are the best. I have only heard of one Bart where the owner was not happy with it however after it was replaced and given to another shooter it consistently shot half min or better at the longs. I have heard kriegers are just as good.

Re: New barrel purchase
What's wrong with our own locally made " Maddco" barrels.
We use them exclusively in 6mm, 6.5mm and 308 and have never had any issues with any of them.

Re: New barrel purchase
I agree with Josh. The difference between costs of barrels (any brand) is not huge. Best to find out what's considered the best and skimp on something else less critical. The only time I wouldn't do that is if availability is a problem.

John
In no particular order if you stick to Brux, Bartlien, Kreiger or Maddco your chances of a great barrel are much higher than the few you mentioned. A $100 will seem like a drop in the ocean when a barrel doesn't work !!
FWIW

Re: New barrel purchase
Bartlien.
Barry, I tried to do what you suggested, rang up and asked for a 300/308 1:10, 32 inches long medium Palma, I was offered a 30 inch 1:13, in six months time.
The Bartlien from 7mm arrived three days later.
I have three Kreigers and one Bartlien, all have shot out of the box, I have only put 60 odds shots through the Barlien and am very exciting about what I'm seeing on the target.....

Thanks Guys
I might just give the Bartlien a go then assuming I can get one in the right profile.
Speaking to Matt some time back he suggested I don't hang anything heavier than HV off my old Omark.
In regards to Maddco I have heard of too many issues with the length of orders. Plus a mate who is a professional fox shooter suggested they are not up to par always. He only uses Shillen match barrels these days but they don't seem to be real common anymore.
Whilst I have all your attention.
Is it worth going over 30" for the little 6BR?
Looking at 7mm.com.au's stock they have a 1:8 and also a 1:7.5" available
Any advantage going the 1:7.5"? Will the 1:7.5" allow 115gr pills to work in the 6BR or is the speed too slow?
And MattP What lead times do you have at the moment?
Thanks

Re: New barrel purchase
I have 2 tse barrels a 6br and a 6.5x47 and they are bloody fantastic. . And the customer service from them is the best. . I for one won't be looking anywhere else for any future purchasing. .

Depends what you're going to use the 6BR for in some respects. If it's an F-class gun I'd go 30". The twist rate 1:1.75 is fine for a 115gr bullet, but the BR case is lacking in capacity and won't be able to drive a 115gr efficiently. Better off sticking to the 80-105gr range.
Re: New barrel purchase
I have 3 barrels running on my FO gun and all shoot amazing. Entered 3 OPM's this year and won all 3. One of them I only dropped one point- my last shot at 1000yds. The barrels just plain shoot. They are all maddco. Never had a krieger that has set my world on fire but they have a good rep in Aus, and never tried bartlein or brux but they both get a good rap on here too. Not changing until one lets me down. And have another chambered ready to run in as well.
Re: New barrel purchase
Maddco have always been brilliant for me, long lead times happen from time to time, but if you do your research and find out just where some of his barrels are going, you start to get a picture of just how good Neville's work is and why there is a lead time.
Sometimes, patience is worth just as much or more than a few bucks.

Re: New barrel purchase
Thanks for all of your feedback everyone .
There was one Bartlien 8 twist 243 heavy varmint left in stock so I bit the bullet and purchased it.
I am going to have Mr Paroz fit it and am also considering going with a barrel block laminate stock.
Going slightly off topic....
Barrel blocks ?? Thumbs up or down?
Thinking the big 30" barrel will be pushing the friendship for the omark?
I am probably going to use the rifle for fly matches and private property more so than fclass.
I am not particularly interested in Sydney's fclass facilities so have stayed away from The sport.
Lastly..
Would you happen to know if Matt Paroz bead blast barrels ?
